MotoGP is headed to Motegi this weekend for the Grand Prix of Japan as Marc Marquez targets several records, including taking the 2025 championship.

Marquez will be hoping to outscore his brother, Alex, by three points this weekend to claim his seventh championship title.

The Spaniard has had a dominant 2025 season, winning 11 out of the 16 races of the year, and standing on the podium a further three times.

This year’s Grand Prix of Japan will mark the 25th race held at the Twin Ring Motegi, with the track first hosting the Pacific Grand Prix between 2000 and 2003.

Eight current riders have MotoGP podiums at the Grand Prix of Japan, including Marquez, Jorge Martin and Francesco Bagnaia, who have taken multiple top-three finishes.

Marc Marquez could break several records at the Grand Prix of Japan

It will come as no surprise that Marc Marquez is the most successful current MotoGP rider at the Twin Ring Motegi circuit, taking three victories in 2016, 2018 and 2019.

Other riders who have taken three MotoGP victories at the Grand Prix of Japan include Valentino Rossi, Dani Pedrosa, Loris Capirossi and Jorge Lorenzo.

The six-time world champion is not only the most successful current rider, but he has also taken the most wins at the grand prix of all time, with five victories across all three classes.

Marquez also holds the most podium positions of any current rider at the Japanese Grand Prix with eight top-three finishes, five ahead of Martin (3) and Bagnaia (2).

The Spaniard has also taken the most pole positions compared to current riders, with two first-place starts compared to just one for Johann Zarco, Pedro Acosta and Martin.

If Marquez wins the Grand Prix of Japan on Sunday, it will be his 100th victory across all three classes and his 74th MotoGP win, extending his gap to Giacomo Agostini, who has 68.

His win will be his 15th with Ducati, making him their third most successful rider behind Casey Stoner (23) and Bagnaia (30).

The victory will also be Marquez’s 12th of the 2025 season, equalling his second-most MotoGP wins in a single season with his 2019 record and Mick Doohan’s in 1997. A further win in the coming races could see him match his own record of 13 wins which he took in 2014.

Marquez has only missed out on the podium twice in 10 visits to the track, where he finished just outside the top-three in fourth place in 2015 and 2022.

His pole position at the 2022 Grand Prix of Japan was his first since the same race three years earlier.
