Marc Marquez could take his seventh MotoGP championship at the Grand Prix of Japan if he outscores his brother, Alex, by three points.

The Spaniard is one of the most successful riders in history, with 8 championships across the classes, the third highest behind Valentino Rossi (9) and Giacomo Agostini (15).

Marquez has been breaking records since his first premier class title during his maiden season, and became the youngest rider to take the title at 20 years old.

He has dominated the 2025 season with 11 grand prix victories from 16 races, including an extra three podium finishes.

The last six years have seen some heavy crashes from Marquez, which have previously pulled his future in MotoGP into question.

MotoGP News has taken a look at Marquez’s worst crashes during his 13-year career.

Dutch TT (2013) – Free Practice 3

Marc Marquez’s first horrific crash came during the third practice session at the Dutch TT at the Circuit Assen.

The rookie, riding for Repsol Honda, was entering his seventh grand prix weekend, and came off his bike at high speeds around the Ramshoek curve.

Marquez tried slick tyres on the drying track, when he hit a damp patch and was thrown from his bike and across the gravel.

The crash resulted in a fracture to his little finger on his right hand and big toe on his right foot, as well as bruising on his hip and shoulder.

Despite the injuries, he was cleared to race by the medical team and put in an impressive performance, finishing second behind Valentino Rossi.

Thai Grand Prix (2019) – Free Practice 1

2019 was one of Marquez’s most dominant seasons, finishing either first or second in 18 out of the 19 races that year.

Heading into the Thai Grand Prix, the Spaniard was comfortably leading the championship and was hoping for his second consecutive win in Buriram.

Marquez had begun the session with a strong performance but had a massive crash at Turn 7, where he suffered injuries to his neck, back and pelvis.

The Spaniard spent several minutes sitting on his knees, clearly winded, before track marshals were able to move him from the gravel.

Marquez was taken to the medical centre before being taken to a local hospital for further checks. Despite the heavy crash, he was uninjured and went on to win Sunday’s grand prix.

Spanish Grand Prix (2020)

Marc Marquez’s most serious crash came at the 2020 Spanish Grand Prix, which was the first race of the year.

The Repsol Honda rider had already crashed earlier in the race at Turn 4, dropping him down from the lead to P19 after he was able to catch the bike with his knee.

Marquez impressively worked his way back through the grid, slotting into second place behind Fabio Quartararo in the closing stage of the race.

On the approach to Turn 3, the Spaniard’s rear tyre gave out, sending him flying off the bike, which came back to hit him and sent him barrel rolling across the gravel.

It was immediately apparent that Marquez had an issue with his arm, with him requiring surgery for a fractured humerus.

Complications from the injury plagued his 2020 season and he did not take part in another grand prix that year.

British Grand Prix (2021) – FP1

Marquez saw an early crash during the British Grand Prix weekend, after tucking the front end of his Honda into the Maggots left-hander at Silverstone, sending him sliding across the gravel.

His bike ended up in the middle of the circuit, causing an immediate red flag, but despite this Marquez still topped the timing sheet.

He returned to the track for FP2, but only finished fifth before later revealing that after the first session, he had been left with some sand in his eye.

Following the day’s practice sessions, Marquez released a statement where he said: “It’s true that unfortunately at the end of FP1 I had a big crash and in that crash I had some sand inside my eye.” before later saying: “I went to the hospital, they cleaned everything. They said tomorrow everything should be ok, but just I need to rest this afternoon, try to be with the eye closed.”

Indonesian Grand Prix (2022) – Warm up session

Marquez’s horrific crash in Indonesia was his biggest incident since he had returned from his arm fracture at the 2020 Spanish Grand Prix.

The Honda rider lost control of the rear tyre at Turn 15, sending him flying through the air, before crashing to the ground and hitting his head.

It appeared that the Spaniard was initially unconscious before coming round and wobbling away from the wreckage.

Marquez was airlifted to the hospital in a helicopter, where he was diagnosed with a concussion, before MotoGP medical staff declared him unfit to take part in that afternoon’s race.
