Alex Marquez had a difficult entry to MotoGP when he debuted with Honda in 2020. His brother Marc Marquez’s incredible success put him under immediate pressure.

The 29-year-old joined the premier class, like his brother, as a Moto3 and Moto2 champion. Marc Marquez had secured six MotoGP titles by the time Alex Marquez made the step up, and they would be partnered together at Honda.

Alex Marquez almost joined Yamaha, but his brother’s rivalry with Valentino Rossi brought an abrupt halt to the deal. In the end, he signed with Honda for 2020, and it would be a difficult season for all parties at the Japanese giants.

Finishing 14th in the standings with two podiums, Alex Marquez found himself dropping to the satellite team LCR for 2021. Meanwhile, defending champion Marc Marquez was not even classified in the championship after breaking his right arm at Jerez.

Alex Marquez had ‘enough’ of talking about Marc Marquez after his injury in 2020

The severity of his injury kept the Ant of Cerveza out of action for the season. Naturally, as his brother, Alex Marquez was constantly asked by the media about Marc’s condition throughout the year.

The 29-year-old has gotten used to questions about his brother in his MotoGP career, given his success and the expectations that have fallen upon him. But speaking with Chiringuito Inside, Marc’s crash at Jerez in 2020 was where Alex drew the line with the media.

“Look, there was only one time when I said: ‘Enough’. It was when he got injured, which was 2020. He wasn’t coming back,” he said.

“And I was his teammate at the time and every race I went to, I mean, every week they asked me about him: ‘How is he?’

“And it wasn’t me who talked about how Marc was doing. I mean, there was a team, there was a representative and they were the ones who had to give news whether there was news or not.

“So, in the end, it was an injury, right? There is no news from one week to the next. It’s the same, that’s it, it’s waiting.

“And then there came a point when I said: ‘Enough. No, you can’t ask me every week how Marc is because I’m not the one who should say it’. It’s the only time.”

Alex Marquez explains why he did not have the same ‘winning DNA’ as brother Marc Marquez growing up

Alex Marquez has seen his name as a ‘burden’ in the past because of his brother. Marc Marquez’s success and records in MotoGP have always cast a shadow over the 29-year-old.

He is now establishing himself as a title contender at Gresini in 2025, with Alex Marquez receiving factory Ducati machinery in 2026. He will look to take the fight to his brother next year, but a winning mentality was not something he shared with Marc growing up.

The 29-year-old viewed his career as a ‘game’ in his early years, while his brother was driven to win from the start: “It was a game. Yes, maybe, for example, Marc had more of the winning DNA. For me, it was a game,” he explained.

“I mean, I had stopped in the middle of the race when my father was passing by here. I had stopped saying: ‘What are you saying?’ It was like a game to me.

“I mean, when you’re little, it’s a game. Then it’s true at some point they bet on you and then my father, who is very realistic about everything and my mother tell me: ‘This costs money’. These people are putting money into you, it’s no longer a game.”
