Marc Marquez took a step closer to clinching the 2025 MotoGP title after fending off attacks from Marco Bezzecchi to the chequered flag at the San Marino Grand Prix for his 11th Grand Prix victory of the season.
Marco Bezzecchi started on pole at Misano, alongside Alex Marquez and Fabio Quartararo on the front row.
The Italian rider retained the lead into turn one, but was quickly on the defensive as Marc Marquez rose to second ahead of his brother on the special-liveried Gresini.
The Ducati rider was glued to the back of Bezzecchi in the opening laps of the race, with his opportunity to take the lead coming on lap 12 as Bezzecchi went wide at turn eight, opening the door for the championship leader to pounce.
The Aprilia man kept Marquez on his toes for the rest of the race, refusing to let the Ant of Cervera build up a lead ahead of the pack. The two riders traded fastest laps as they tried to get an advantage over each other on the Italian tarmac.
Marquez kept his cool to take the chequered flag ahead of Bezzecchi in a nail-biting race in which both riders earned the full respect of each other with their wheel-to-wheel combat.
Pedro Acosta made an early charge, making up five positions in the opening six laps of the race to slot himself into fourth before an issue with the ride-height device on his KTM bike ended his race prematurely.
The woes for Francesco Bagnaia at Ducati in 2025 went from bad to worse on lap 10. The two-time world champion fell off his bike in an unforced mistake and was forced to watch the rest of the race from the factory Ducati garage.
It was a frustrating race for Quartararo as the performance of the Yamaha once again highlighted its vulnerabilities. After qualifying third, the Frenchman was swallowed by the field as he finished in eighth.
The result pushes Marquez closer to securing the 2025 MotoGP title. The Spaniard will have an opportunity to etch his name onto the premier class trophy at the Japanese Grand Prix in a fortnight’s time.
