Enea Bastianini praised for nailing ‘shocking’ Catalan Grand Prix moment that left Peter Bom stunned

Enea Bastianini secured the best result of his KTM career with a first podium in navy and orange at the Catalan Grand Prix.

The Italian was one of few riders who suffered a miserable start to the campaign, but has slowly found a way to get to grips with his new machinery. Now, he’s getting back to his best MotoGP form.

Since leaving Ducati, Bastianini has spent a considerable amount of time looking like a shell of his past self.

However, a mid-season breakthrough from KTM has revitalised both the factory team and Tech3, and they seem to be in contention for the top 10 at every race again.

Bastianini met Guenther Steiner’s pre-race demand to secure a trophy in Spain, just days after a deal was struck for him to complete a takeover of Tech3.

Despite his success, Bastianini would still like to be at Ducati after witnessing Marc Marquez’s dominance this year. Who knows what he could have achieved?

Enea Bastianini praised for nailing ‘shocking’ Pedro Acosta overtake at the Catalan Grand Prix

Bastianini has done two things for KTM and has helped to bring some confidence to his team with strong pace recently.

Maverick Vinales’ injury felt like it would be a massive blow for Tech3, but their second rider has stepped up and filled the void well.

Peter Bom was most surprised by Bastianini’s bold overtake on KTM colleague Pedro Acosta in Spain, which easily could have ended badly.

“This only works a couple of times a year,” he said. “The funny combination of how you assess your setup, how the tyre is, how the rear ride height device comes back. When it works, Enea is a full master of it.

“The shocking moment for me was, the interesting moment was when Enea passed Pedro and like f—– up his braking and still got away with it.”

How Enea Bastianini has started to show signs that his MotoGP form is back for good

Over the last three events, Bastianini has now finished in the top eight four times, including sprint races, too.

He could have been on for a better result at the Czech Grand Prix after securing a podium in the sprint, but he didn’t lose faith in his bike or team.

The final seven races of the season are an opportunity for him to show what he can do on the KTM now that he is comfortable with it.

At one stage, his future in the sport looked vulnerable. Now, he’s reminding everyone of just how talented he is, and how much he can deliver in MotoGP.
