Liberty Media have already hatched documentary plan as Guenther Steiner takes over at Tech3

Guenther Steiner will become the new face of the Tech3 MotoGP team. He’s fronting a consortium that has purchased the team from Herve Poncharal.

Poncharal will continue in his role until the end of the season before transitioning into a consultancy position. Steiner will be the CEO, while business partner Richard Coleman becomes team principal.

The news was announced in a press conference at the Catalan Grand Prix on Friday. It had been heavily rumoured for months.

Steiner rose to prominence as the boss of the Haas Formula 1 team from their 2016 debut until the end of 2023. He has primarily been carrying out punditry work since his departure.

Guenther Steiner documentary could be one of Liberty Media’s ‘first steps’

As noted by The Race, the arrival of Steiner is a dream for Liberty Media. The American conglomerate recently completed their purchase of MotoGP from Dorna.

This was no doubt a key factor in Steiner’s interest in Tech3. He’s anticipating that the team’s value will grow significantly, repeating a trend seen under Liberty in F1.

Steiner became a superstar in the world of F1 thanks to his blunt and occasionally explicit contributions to Netflix’s Drive to Survive series, one of the most successful sporting documentaries ever.

Liberty will hope that the 60-year-old can bring viewers across from the four-wheel series. One of their first steps is ‘likely’ to be a documentary centred on Steiner.

Dorna made a guarantee to Guenther Steiner before he completed Tech3 MotoGP deal

There’s already talk that Liberty could commission a MotoGP version of Drive to Survive, perhaps simply called ‘Ride to Survive’. Theoretically, that could begin filming in 2026, whereas production could get underway on a Steiner documentary immediately.

Tech3 will remain aligned with KTM for 2026, and the contracts of Enea Bastianini and Maverick Vinales will both be honoured.

Dorna promised Steiner that he will control Tech3’s grid slots even if backers KTM leave the sport. The Austrian manufacturer haven’t made a decision on their long-term future after narrowly avoiding going bust.

Liberty may also release a series on the Marc Marquez and Valentino Rossi feud, which erupted 10 years ago. They’ve already proven in F1 that they know how to reach a new generation of fans.
