MotoGP is back after a month-long summer break, and all eyes are turning to the 13th race of the season in Austria as excitement begins to ramp up in the championship.

Marc Marquez will be hoping to continue his winning streak after the break, following victories in the last five races, and three more wins at the start of the year.

With just 10 races in the 2025 season remaining, the Spaniard will be targeting his seventh MotoGP championship, his first since 2019.

Marquez started third at last year’s Austrian Grand Prix but struggled to engage his front ride-height device on the grid, which saw him drop through the grid at the start. A tangle with Franco Morbidelli in the Turn 1 braking zone saw both riders run wide and Marquez fall to 13th place.

Francesco Bagnaia displayed an impressive performance over the 2024 Austrian Grand Prix weekend, claiming his seventh win of the season, to take him five points ahead of Jorge Martin.

Bagnaia’s teammate Enea Bastianini rose from seventh on the grid to third at the start of the race, due to Marquez’s issues, and despite pulling away with the leaders at the beginning, lost touch, but remained in third.

Where is the 2025 MotoGP Austrian Grand Prix being held?

The 2025 MotoGP Austrian Grand Prix will take place at the Red Bull Ring in Spielberg. The track opened in 1969 and was built to replace the Zeltweg Airbase Circuit, which was known for its abrasive and bumpy surface.

Originally named Osterreichring, the circuit first hosted the F.I.M. Road Racing Championship in 1979, but the Austrian Grand Prix was scrapped in 1998 due to low ticket sales over the two previous years. After 19 years it returned in 2016 to the MotoGP calendar and has remained as a permanent feature since.

The 4.326km (2.688 mile) Red Bull Ring has been modified slightly for MotoGP, with a chicane being added at Turn 2 in 2022 to improve safety and add potential for more overtakes.

What happened at the 2024 Moto2 and Moto3 Austrian Grand Prix races?

Celestino Vietti took pole for the 2024 Moto2 Austrian Grand Prix, and despite a difficult start where almost all the riders went wide into Turn 1, the Italian managed to retain his position.

Vietti built a lead of one and a half seconds, but almost lost the lead on lap 10 when he accidentally hit neutral and went wide on Lap 10. Alonso Lopez and Aron Canet in second and third, respectively, began to pull the leader back into view before Vietti re-opened the gap to over 2 seconds by the chequered flag.

In his first win since the 2023 Moto2 Austrian Grand Prix, the Italian crossed the line in dramatic fashion, performing a wheelie as he took the chequered flag.

Alonso saw himself drop from third to tenth but wasted no time working his way through the pack, and ultimately taking the lead on lap 16. The race ended in a photo finish with the Colombian crossing the line just 0.121s ahead of second place David Munoz.
