Alberto Puig picks the most ‘special’ victory of Marc Marquez’s record-breaking Honda career

Marc Marquez is just four wins away from wrapping up a century of motorcycle victories across all the categories he has competed in since the age of 15.

The Spaniard spent 10 years in MotoGP with Honda before opting to move on from their operation following a painful dip in form.

Quite literally, it had been too painful for Marquez, who suffered multiple crashes, surgeries and devastating injuries.

By 2023, the bike, which had led him to six MotoGP titles in seven years, was no more, and pushing the limit on it had its consequences.

At one stage, Marquez ‘completely overshadowed’ Valentino Rossi’s retirement as he dominated the sport. Not even the great Vale could get close to him.

After Ducati feared losing without signing Marquez, they promptly made the right decision. Now they’re in line to complete one of the most dominant seasons ever in 2025.

Alberto Puig picks the 2021 German Grand Prix as Marc Marquez’s most ‘special’ MotoGP win

Alberto Puig gave a ‘frank’ response about a Marquez Honda return, and it feels like any move of that calibre is years away.

Currently on a run of five consecutive Grands Prix victories and 10 in total, including sprints, he now sits on 96 race victories, 70 of which have come in MotoGP.

Speaking about the best of those, Honda team manager Puig mentioned that his comeback victory at the 2021 German Grand Prix was the best.

“There’s so many I forgot. Not most incredible, but maybe most emotional would be in 2021 in Sachsenring, because this was the first time he won a GP after his accident.

“So I remember that time, it was super, super emotional for him of course, and for all the team. It was like a relief, it was something super special.”

Why was Marc Marquez’s 2021 German Grand Prix victory so special?

Marc Marquez’s MotoGP career could easily have ended on the spot back in 2020, after a horrific highside at the season-opener at Jerez.

It took him a whole year to recover from, and with limited movement in his arm at that. It was expected he would never be the same rider again.

On the evidence of his first five races in 2021, with no finish higher than seventh, it looked as though that might be the case.

However, at his beloved Sachsenring, he burst into life and regained some confidence by winning at the track he had won at in every year he had competed since 2010 in Moto3.
