Alberto Puig gives ‘frank’ response when asked about bringing Marc Marquez back to Honda one day

The end of Marc Marquez’s Honda tenure was a bittersweet ordeal, as he moved onto bigger and better things with Ducati.

The eight-time champion had realised by 2023 that it was no longer possible for him to win with Honda again in MotoGP any time soon. Just too much work was needed.

Instead, Marquez made an inspired move to Gresini, before Ducati immediately promoted him to their factory team for 2025.

Currently, he’s in the midst of one of his most dominant spells in the sport, having won both races at each of the last five events. He entered the summer break with a commanding 120-point championship lead.

Despite his performances, Jorge Lorenzo thinks Marquez has one weakness that holds him back from being even more dominant.

Even reigning champion Jorge Martin ‘almost crashed’ trying to replicate Marquez when he returned to the sport after an extended absence in July. It shows how talented he really is.

Alberto Puig offers ‘frank’ assessment of Marc Marquez Honda return for 2027

Marquez had to ‘entertain himself’ amid Ducati’s dominance at the Czech Grand Prix by playing with setting fastest laps to stay awake and concentrated.

In his current form, any team on the grid would love to have him on their bike. While Honda have improved, it hasn’t been enough for them to compete for regular podiums.

It restricts any real hope of a Marquez return in the near future. He maintains good relationships with his ex-colleagues, but they still have work to do.

Alberto Puig, team manager of Honda, is aware of this and thinks that a return to the team for 2027 would be a ‘complicated’ ordeal.

“There came a point where Honda and Marc had to separate and the only thing you can remember are very good memories,” he told Diario AS. “Thinking about being together again in 2027 is complicated, to be frank.”

Which MotoGP records can Marc Marquez break in the second half of 2025?

At this stage, Marquez is almost guaranteed to match Valentino Rossi’s tally of seven premier class titles in 2025.

He would also beat his record for being the oldest champion in MotoGP history by two years at the age of 32.

His current win streak means that if he can double his run by winning the next five Grands Prix, he will match his incredible run from the 2014 season with Honda, when he won the first 10 races.

And his form in sprint races means that setting an almost unbeatable record for sprint wins in a season is almost guaranteed, too. Fans are being treated to a clinic in motorcycle racing of the highest calibre.
