Jorge Martin returned to MotoGP in Brno after missing the previous seven rounds due to injuries sustained at the Qatar Grand Prix in April.

Following the injury and subsequent absence from the MotoGP grid, Martin then dropped the bombshell that he wished to depart from Aprilia and activate his release clause.

Martin reportedly held secret meetings at the French Grand Prix in hopes of forcing a move away from the Italian team. He has since backtracked on his desire to leave after an Aprilia test at Misano before his return to MotoGP for the Czech Republic Grand Prix.

The Qatar Grand Prix is the first and only round that the 2024 world champion has competed in so far this season. A brutal crash in a pre-season test at Sepang ruled Martin out of the first three rounds due to him requiring immediate surgery on his wrists and ankles.

Angel Martin was spotted putting Jorge Martin’s glove on for him ahead of FP1

With just over ten minutes to go in the first practice session of the weekend, the broadcast focused on Angel Martin aiding his son with putting on his gloves before heading on track.

Commentators Gavin Emmett and Sylvain Guintoli picked up on the exchange between the Martins, with Emmett saying, “Interesting, Angel Martin, Jorge’s father, is putting his glove on. Clearly, on the left wrist, he is still having a few issues with the way he was flexing his fingers.”

Guintoli replied, “He was shaking the right hand as well because he had injured both sides and both ankles as well. That’s an injury from Sepang. It shows you how long an injury can take to heal.

“For him, it was the head of the radius to the scaphoid, and it takes forever for those injuries to come back right. Obviously, he’s still not feeling 100% with those injuries.”

How did Jorge Martin’s FP1 after a long-awaited return to MotoGP in Brno go?

Championship leader Marc Marquez topped the time sheets in a soggy FP1 in Brno, despite encountering issues with his Ducati in the first half of the session.

Martin completed 15 laps on his RS-GP during the 45-minute practice session, setting one lap which was good enough for the top five had it not been later deleted for exceeding track limits.

The Spaniard finished his first MotoGP session for four months with the 17th fastest time on the grid, some two-and-a-half seconds off of Marquez’s benchmark.

Aprilia teammate Marco Bezzecchi was seventh fastest after completing 12 laps, which would have been greater if the Italian hadn’t had an off during the opening laps of the session.

We are yet to properly see what Martin can do on an Aprilia, with the 14 laps of the Qatar Grand Prix being his only appearance in racing conditions for the Italian constructor since his move from Prima Pramac Racing after winning the world title with them in 2024.
