Fermin Aldeguer has revealed that he used the break between the Dutch Grand Prix and German Grand Prix to write to Joan Mir about their crash last time out at Assen.

The 2025 MotoGP season took a brief hiatus following its annual visit to the TT Circuit Assen two weeks ago, before reconvening at the Sachsenring this weekend. Now, Aldeguer and Mir both have bounce-back displays on their minds in Germany, after retiring from the Dutch GP.

A high-speed collision on Lap 6 of 26 saw the Gresini rookie and Honda rider bow out of the action in the Netherlands. It was an especially costly lap for Gresini, who saw Alex Marquez break a metacarpal in his left hand in the Dutch GP after colliding with Pedro Acosta of KTM.

Fermin Aldeguer ‘started laughing’ at Joan Mir calling him ‘Kid’ after their Dutch GP crash

Mir was unable to avoid a painful early finish to his Dutch GP as the 2020 MotoGP champion rode over Aldeguer’s stricken Ducati GP24 after his Spanish compatriot highsided at Turn 11. Yamaha ace Fabio Quartararo also needed to veer off into the grass to avoid Aldeguer’s bike.

The speed of the highside left Aldeguer visibly worse for wear, so Mir instantly charged over to the 20-year-old to check on him. Both pilots escaped big injuries, yet Mir calling Aldeguer a ‘kid’ in their brief discussion instantly after their crash at Assen left the Murcian ‘laughing’.

Aldeguer said, via quotes by Motosan: “A day or two later, I wrote [to] him [about] how I was and thanked him for coming to ask me and all that. And he said, when I was there on the ground, he said, ‘How are you, kid?’. You know? He still calls me, ‘Kid’.

“At that moment, when he says, ‘How are you, kid?’, I started laughing. With all the snot running down my face, I don’t know, all burst [and] no air. And he says, ‘How are you, kid?’. Well, no.”

Aldeguer and Mir will now hope to produce bounce-back performances in the German GP at the Sachsenring this weekend, having penned their third and sixth retirements of the season so far at Assen. Mir has taken the chequered flag in just four of the 10 Grands Prix this term.

Their crash in the Dutch GP even ended Mir’s run of three consecutive point-scoring finishes for the first time since the fourth round of the 2022 season for Suzuki. He has still not taken points across four consecutive Grands Prix since Mir joined Honda from the 2023 campaign.

Aldeguer was also on a run of four straight point-scoring finishes heading into the Dutch GP, marking the best run of his rookie campaign to date. But after the highs of Aldeguer coming third in the French Grand Prix for his first MotoGP podium, he took P8, P6 and P12 finishes.
