Suzi Perry explains why Marc Marquez would refuse to visit MotoGP medical clinic amid Valentino Rossi rivalry

Marc Marquez has always been a crash-prone rider. But he’s refused to let it define his career.

Experts were convinced that Marquez would ‘end up in hospital’ if he carried his riding style from the lower classes. While he’s logged plenty of visits in the last 12 years, his ultra-aggressive approach has proven to be brutally effective.

Between his debut at the start of 2013 and the beginning of 2020, he didn’t miss a race. A severe arm injury then disrupted the next four seasons, but Marquez looks more dominant than ever after multiple surgeries.

Pedro Acosta thinks Marquez is the toughest rider the sport has seen. 68 points clear of his brother Alex, he’s on course to complete one of motorsport’s great comeback stories.

Marc Marquez was wary of Italian doctors in MotoGP clinic

Marquez suffered two heavy crashes in practice for the Dutch Grand Prix last weekend. The second required a visit to the medical centre before he was passed fit for Saturday’s running.

According to TNT Sports presenter Suzi Perry, Marquez was extremely reluctant to visit the MotoGP medical clinic in the past. This was because it was run by Italian doctors.

He was wary that information about his condition would end up leaking to his great rival Valentino Rossi. This was likely just paranoia, but it highlights the psychological warfare that was taking place.

Marquez got used to ‘hiding’ his injuries so he wouldn’t offer a boost to Rossi, or any of his other competitors.

“He hides any problem that he has,” Perry said during the coverage of FP1. “He used to not go to the clinic when it was run by Italians because he did not want the Italian riders – i.e. Valentino Rossi – to know how damaged he was. He wouldn’t go. That’s the make of Marc.”

Valentino Rossi alumnus has a problem with Marc Marquez

Marquez is looking to equal Valentino Rossi’s record of seven premier-class titles, and nine in Grand Prix racing. Barring another injury lay-off, this looks like a near inevitability.

The 32-year-old has apparently been training with ‘military discipline’. He continues to set the standard across the board.

Rossi retired at the end of 2021, but the animosity between the duo lingers. Now he’s effectively waging a proxy war through his VR46 academy graduates.

Indeed, Marco Bezzecchi holds a ‘grudge’ against Marquez, also influenced by their personal history. Fellow alumnus Francesco Bagnaia hasn’t been able to challenge his teammate in 2025.
