Marc Marquez is gunning for his seventh MotoGP world championship in 2025. That would see him equal Valentino Rossi in second place all-time.
Giacomo Agostini is currently out on his own with eight titles. Ducati’s current dominance suggests Marquez should be able to go back-to-back before the 2027 regulation changes.
To do that, he’ll have to regain top spot from his brother. Alex Marquez scored his first MotoGP victory in Jerez last time out, inching a point ahead of Marc, who recovered to P12 after an accident.
| RANK | RIDER | WINS | POLES | PODIUMS | TITLES |
| 1 | Giacomo Agostini | 68 | 21 | 88 | 8 |
| 2 | Valentino Rossi | 89 | 55 | 199 | 7 |
| 3 | Marc Marquez | 65 | 70 | 114 | 6 |
| 4 | Mick Doohan | 54 | 58 | 95 | 5 |
| 5 | Mike Hailwood | 37 | N/A | 48 | 4 |
A podium would have seen Marquez senior overtake Jorge Lorenzo for second place on the leaderboard (currently tied at 114). As the table above shows, he’s already the record-holder for pole positions.
Alex Marquez picks Giacomo Agostini as MotoGP GOAT over Marc Marquez
During the Spanish GP weekend, Alex Marquez was asked to name the best rider/circuit in different categories. For instance, he picked Barry Sheene for the best Briton ever.
He also chose Trackhouse’s Ai Ogura as the rookie who has impressed him most in 2025, rather than Gresini teammate Fermin Aldeguer.
Phillip Island is his favourite track, with turn three the best corner on the calendar in his opinion. He still feels Jerez has the edge when it comes to the crowd, though.
Most notably, though, Marquez selected Angel Nieto as the best Spanish rider of all time. The late Nieto, who lends his name to the Jerez circuit, won seven 125cc titles.
It was no surprise, then, that he didn’t go with his brother as the GOAT. In his eyes, that honour still belongs to Agostini.
Johann Zarco’s revealing admission about Marc Marquez’s Honda data
Despite racing for LCR in 2023 when Marquez was still at Honda, Alex Rins chose Rossi as the GOAT when playing the same game.
The Japanese manufacturer continue to make use of the Ant of Cervera’s data even though he left around 18 months ago.
Johann Zarco has been studying Marquez’s telemetry but he still ‘can’t understand’ how he’s so fast in left-hand corners. Many in the MotoGP paddock are baffled.
Marquez has showcased an incredible resistance to pressure ever since his first top-level season. He beat Lorenzo to the title that year, holding his own in the Valencia decider by scoring a podium.
