Marc Marquez makes ‘undeniable’ claim about Fabio Quartararo’s pace at the Spanish Grand Prix

Fabio Quartararo and Yamaha are showing signs of getting back to their very best after yet another excellent MotoGP qualifying performance at Jerez.

Just one race ago in Qatar, Quartararo ended a three-year front row drought by securing second place for the race in the Middle East.

Although he dropped back, his one-lap pace has been as rapid recently as it looked like it might be at pre-season. Yamaha are doing something well behind the scenes.

The Grand Prix of Spain has seen them make yet another breakthrough, with the Frenchman’s first pole position ending yet another three-year drought.

Sylvain Guintoli called Quartararo ‘unreal’ in Spain before he fell off his bike in the sprint race, and praised his start.

It wasn’t the only plaudits he has received all weekend, with Yamaha riders saying Quartararo did something ‘special’ on Saturday. They can’t believe how he controls the front of his bike.

Marc Marquez says Fabio Quartararo’s talent is ‘undeniable’ at the Spanish Grand Prix

The Yamaha bike had been one of the most disappointing machines to start the MotoGP season, and looked like it may be the slowest of all after the third round in COTA.

The improvements they have made in qualifying have been impressive, although the need for more on a Sunday remains.

They must find a way to turn their promising starts into points. Championship leader Marc Marquez has been very complimentary of his rivals’ skillset at Jerez.

“This proves once again that his talent is undeniable,” he told DAZN. “And little by little, when the Yamaha is fine-tuned, he’ll be one of the toughest rivals, and why not tomorrow?

“I believed, and I still believe, because he’s shown this weekend, that he has great pace.”

Why Fabio Quartararo may be disappointed with his Grand Prix of Spain performance

After looking so strong all weekend, Quartararo found a way to put a negative spin on things by falling off his bike during the sprint.

While battling with Marquez for the lead, he dismounted, resulting in a DNF and loss of yet more points which were almost guaranteed.

He can find solace in the fact that his mistake was borne through pushing for a victory, but it’s frustrating that a good result was on the table. It would have been an immediate reward for their hard work.

There are 17 more races this season to make up for it, and on the current trajectory, competing for regular race victories by the end of the campaign isn’t out of question.
