Fermin Aldeguer is one of three rookies on the 2025 MotoGP grid, along with Ai Ogura and Somkiat Chantra. Having just turned 20, Aldeguer is the youngest of the trio, and by extension, the youngest in the premier class.
The Spaniard skipped Moto3 and went straight to the intermediate class after a brief stint in MotoE. After finishing third in 2023, he looked primed for the title last year, but he slipped to fifth in the standings.
Ogura was triumphant instead, but Ducati had seen enough to promote Aldeguer to MotoGP with satellite team Gresini. It’s been a slow start, with just three points on the board in as many weekends.

Teammate Alex Marquez, also riding a GP24, tops the championship, but Aldeguer is 19th ahead of the Grand Prix of Qatar. His race results so far read 13th, 13th, 19th, 16th, 11th, DNF.
Gresini rookie Fermin Aldeguer shares the track with amateur riders before Qatar Grand Prix
Given his youth, Aldeguer won’t necessarily be hiring out tracks privately for his testing sessions like some of MotoGP’s established stars. Instead, he was recently seen in action at the Cartagena circuit in Spain – a 3.5km venue that has previously been used by British Superbike teams.
Reddit user u/zilwis revealed that they’d booked a track day at the Murcian venue last week and were shocked to see Aldeguer fly past. He was accompanied by Moto2 rider Daniel Holgado.
The amateur rider briefly thought he could keep up with the duo before he saw ’54 on the back of a Gresini team suit’. They were apparently eight to 10 seconds faster than their competitors.
Holgado sits seventh in the Moto2 standings after the opening three rounds. He was runner-up in Moto3 last year.
Fermin Aldeguer stunned Johann Zarco in breakout MotoGP race
Aldeguer produced his most promising performance yet at the Americas GP last time out, even though he ultimately crashed out. He was challenging for a top-five finish before his accident.
He showed formidable speed on his charge through the field, but his inexperience may have cost him as he took one gamble too many. Still, Johann Zarco called Aldeguer’s pace ‘wild’ and Luigi Dall’Igna also offered words of encouragement.
Aldeguer loved battling Jack Miller and he should be able to contend with the big names more often as he grows in confidence. Unfortunately, though, he may not maximise the GP24’s peak window of performance relative to its successor.
TNT Sports pundit Michael Laverty wants Aldeguer to ‘be realistic’ in his objectives for the moment. The more he allows desperation to creep into his riding, the more mistakes he’ll make.
