Miguel Oliveira became the latest rider to be sidelined in the 2025 MotoGP season. The 30-year-old missed the Argentina Grand Prix after crashing in the Sprint race.

The Portuguese rider is racing with Yamaha satellite team Pramac this season after moving from Trackhosuse Racing. The Tuscany-based team won the 2024 title with Jorge Martin while partnered with Ducati.

Oliveira has signed a two-year deal with Pramac that takes him until the end of the current regulations in 2026. Yamaha appear to have made a step forward in 2025 under the concession system, giving them hope of a better campaign than second-bottom in 2024.

However, it has been a challenging start to the season for Oliveira. The Portuguese rider grabbed two points at the Thailand Grand Prix with 14th while teammate Jack Miller was 11th.

At the Argentina Grand Prix, both Pramac riders failed to reach Q2 as Oliveira lined up 17th for the Sprint. Battling with Fermin Aldeguer, he suffered a nasty-looking accident that forced him to miss the main race on Sunday.

Gino Borsoi says Miguel Oliveira suffered ‘bigger’ pain than Saturday after Argentina Grand Prix crash

Aldeguer and Oliveira collided on lap five of the Sprint after the former made a late lunge on the inside. The Yamaha rider crashed heavily across the gravel while the Gresini was able to get going again.

Aldeguer was given a long-lap penalty for Sunday’s race following an investigation. Oliveira was flown back to Portugal to undergo checks on his shoulder – it seemed the 30-year-old managed to escape injury.

However, Pramac boss Gino Borsoi did not have an encouraging update on the situation on Sunday. Speaking on TNT Sports ahead of the Grand Prix at Termas de Rio Hondo, he revealed Oliveira was suffering ‘bigger’ pain than Saturday.

“Well at the moment I have not much more [of an] update compared to yesterday what I know,” said Borsoi on the grid.

“Because this morning I had a chat with him before [the] flight back to Portugal. The feeling was not so nice honestly speaking. The pain was bigger than yesterday, so let’s see tomorrow when he comes back. He has a check-[up] with the doctor.”

Who could replace Miguel Oliveira if he is unavailable for Austin?

It is currently unknown if Oliveira will be back for the next round in Austin. While he seems to have not sustained injury from his crash in Argentina, Borsoi’s update will be concerning for Pramac.

The team will be hopeful he can make a recovery and return in time for the race at the Circuit of the Americas. However, if Oliveira is not fully fit, Pramac do not have a reserve rider to call upon.

Yamaha do have an option in Cal Crutchlow. However, the Brit has been struggling with a hand injury for quite some time – he missed his home race last year when he was due to enter as a wildcard.

Some people believe Crutchlow may never ride a MotoGP bike again because of the injury. Pramac will therefore be praying Oliveira is given the all clear to race in Austin or they risk running one bike.
