Marc Marquez has managed to turn his MotoGP career around at the last moment just as people began to doubt whether he could do it anymore.

He leads the MotoGP championship currently and is the favourite to secure a seventh title with Ducati in 2025.

Marquez left Honda at the end of 2023 to pursue an opening on a Ducati bike with Gresini. He won three races on a one-year-old GP23 chassis before receiving a promotion to the factory operations.

He is teammates with two-time champion Francesco Bagnaia now and is part of one of the most fearsome rider pairings of all time.

Marquez faced a ‘complicated’ issue after joining Ducati by fighting through his brutal injruies to return to the top of the podium.

Even though some expected him to have a tricky relationship with his new partner, Bagnaia has a ‘pact’ with Marquez to learn his secrets for left-hand turns. They seem to have a good relationship.

Marc Marquez ‘had to know’ if he was still competitive before quitting MotoGP

The Spaniard will break the record for being the oldest MotoGP champion of the modern era (32) by two years if he wins in 2025, eclipsing arch-rival Valentino Rossi.

Marquez was ‘suffering’ at Honda before he chose to abandon their project and join a team with a faster bike last season.

The six-time champion has admitted that he made the move because he needed to know whether or not he could still cut it at the top level before retiring.

“Well, during when you have such a big period of injuries, my sporting career until 2019 had been a success. It had been a dream, everything was victories, and if not, then podiums,” he said.

“But I experienced the other side of sport, which is injuries. And that’s where I entered a very negative loop of many injuries, OF even considering quitting because I wasn’t enjoying it.

“But before quitting, I had to know if I was still competitive or not. That’s why I made the decision to look for the best bike, which was last year to go to the Gresini team and bet on myself.”

How Marc Marquez could dominate MotoGP in 2025 with Ducati

2025 could be a rare example of a legendary athlete near his prime, on one of the most dominant bikes that has ever been produced.

At the Thailand Grand Prix, Marquez left Bagnaia ‘perplexed by his pace and how easily he was able to manipulate the race.

The next few rounds in Argentina and COTA are low grip tracks which suit his style too. There’s a real possibility that he will build a big gap after just three races.

It has placed Bagnaia under some early pressure to perform, and if he makes mistakes, he will fall behind his rival very quickly.

The Italian rider is aware of how costly errors can be, after he missed out on the title by just 10 points last year despite scoring eight more victories than Jorge Martin.
