Scott Redding thought one rider’s move to MotoGP would be a ‘massive disaster’, now he has 23 podiums

Scott Redding enjoyed five seasons in the premier class of motorcycle Grand Prix racing.

Joining MotoGP in 2014 with Gresini – who were then a Honda satellite team – Redding finished 12th in his debut season. This would be the highest finish of his career in the premier class.

The Brit moved to the Marc VDS Racing Team in 2015 and grabbed his first podium with third at Misano. He repeated that feat the following year when he moved to Ducati satellite team Pramac, finishing third at Assen.

Redding struggled to find consistency after that, finishing 14th with 64 points in 2017. He returned to Gresini in 2018 – this time on an Aprilia – but could only manage 20 points all season before leaving MotoGP at the end of the season.

The 32-year-old has since competed in the Superbike World Championship after struggling to get accustomed to the premier class. A year after his debut in MotoGP, Jack Miller joined the grid with LCR Honda – and Redding had serious doubts about the Aussie.

Miller made the jump from Moto3 to MotoGP after finishing second in the former in 2014. Initially, the 30-year-old struggled to find his feet, finishing 19th with 17th points in his rookie season.

Speaking with Motorsport Republica, Redding recalled feeling that Miller’s move would be a ‘massive disaster’: “I think it was Jack Miller who was one of the first guys to go from Moto3 [to MotoGP],” he said.

“I was like: ‘There is no way. It is not going to work’. I was like: ‘There’s going to be a massive disaster’.

“Like I don’t know how he got his head around it. I know he’s pretty wild, he’s out there.”

Redding would ultimately be proved wrong as Miller has since gone on to grab four wins and 23 podiums in MotoGP. The Aussie recorded his best season in 2021 with Ducati, finishing fourth with 181 points.

Now at satellite Yamaha team Pramac, the 30-year-old is looking to bounce back from a difficult spell at KTM.

Miller is on a ‘prove it’ contract at Pramac for the 2025 season. He likely would have been off the grid had the Tuscany-based team not offered him a deal.

Expectations were low for 2025, but at the Thailand Grand Prix, Miller impressed on the YZR-M1 as he finished 11th in the race. The Aussie had been battling as high as sixth before dropping back.

Keith Huewen lauded Miller’s outstanding performance as it showed a major sign of improvement from Yamaha. The Japanese manufacturer had a dismal 2024 campaign but they have clearly taken a huge step forward in 2025.
