Honda confirm Moto2 rider David Alonso will ride for the Japanese MotoGP brand in 2027

Honda have announced the signing of Moto2 rider David Alonso on a ‘multi-year contract’ that will see the 20-year-old join the MotoGP grid from 2027.

HRC confirmed the agreement in an official announcement on Tuesday, though the manufacturer did not specify which team Alonso will join within their premier class structure.

Alonso’s point of entry could be either the official Honda factory team or their satellite team, LCR, with the young Colombian being linked to both seats ahead of the brand’s confirmation of his signing.

Honda confirm signing of 2024 Moto3 world champion David Alonso

Under the terms of the agreement, Alonso will make his first on-track appearance riding Honda’s 2027 bike during MotoGP’s official post-season test at Valencia.

Honda confirmed the move in an official press release on Tuesday morning, writing: “Honda Racing Corporation (HRC) are pleased to confirm the signing of David Alonso on a multi-year contract for the MotoGP World Championship.

“The 20-year-old Colombian has authored one of the most impressive runs through the lightweight classes in recent times, finishing third as a Moto3 rookie in 2023 before dominating the class the following year.

“Currently in his second season in the Moto2 World Championship, Alonso took his maiden intermediate class win at the 2025 Hungarian Grand Prix and currently sits fourth overall in the 2026 title hunt.

“With a total of 20 wins, 30 podiums and nine pole positions across Moto3 and Moto2, Alonso has continued to surpass expectations.”

Honda have not disclosed the duration of said multi-year deal, nor have they confirmed further details regarding the line-up of their two teams for 2027.

Fabio Quartararo is expected to fill one of the seats at Honda after confirmation of his exit from Yamaha landed last month.

Diogo Moreira has also been linked with a step up from LCR, but some reports have also suggested that Alonso could leapfrog his former rival for the seat.
