Marc Marquez raises fear about 2027 MotoGP regulations after what he noticed in testing

Marc Marquez is concerned that the new MotoGP rules could actually damage the spectacle for fans.

One of the core aims of the 2027 regulation changes is to make the product more exciting. With aerodynamics stripped back, it’s hoped that overtaking will be easier.

What’s more, new restrictions on electronics are aimed at increasing the emphasis on rider skill, as opposed to the performance of the bike. The target is to improve safety and entertainment simultaneously.

Marc Marquez ‘not very optimistic’ about new MotoGP rules improving racing

In an interview with MC News at Ducati’s recent Race of Champions event, Marquez was asked whether MotoGP would be ‘better to watch’ next year.

The seven-time premier-class champion was one of the riders who tested the 2027 prototypes at Brno recently.

Marquez’s running was limited due to a crash in the morning session, but he immediately realised that the braking zones will be shorter because the top speed of the 850cc engine is lower than its 1000cc predecessor.

That, if anything, could make overtaking more difficult.

“At the moment, I am not very optimistic about that,” Marquez said. “I would like it to be, but at the moment, based on what I’ve tried, the bikes are more or less the same.

“The engine is less performant, but that also makes the braking points shorter. But the way we brake is harder. So, in the end, overtaking will be difficult, sometimes even more so.

“The bike is already quite powerful, even if it is 850cc. From the grandstand, maybe you will not even realise. It is true that, for example, with 1000cc on most straights, even here at Misano, we are not using the full torque. So, with that bike, we will use full torque from the exit of the corner.

“The biggest difference will be the tyres. Depending on the tyre, we will see one kind of race or another kind of race.”

MotoGP is switching from Michelin tyres to Pirellis for 2027. Both Marquez and Ducati boss Luigi Dall’Igna have already said this will outweigh the impact of the aforementioned technical changes, even though the teams have been using 1000cc engines for 14 years now.
