What Marc Marquez’s entourage were saying ‘off the record’ before Hungarian GP win

Marc Marquez was doing everything to play down expectations at the Hungarian Grand Prix, but his entourage were adamant that a result was on the cards.

Multiple people were backing the Ant of Cervera to bounce back and grab a top result at Balaton Park, as the layout is far less physically demanding than Mugello. That proved the case, as Marquez grabbed a clean sweep and won his and Ducati’s 100th race.

Neil Hodgson thought Marquez would never win again after his latest injury, which had taken him out of the French and Catalan Grand Prix and had caused him issues throughout the season. It would explain why he was trying to quieten the noise from his entourage.

Marc Marquez’s entourage said ‘off the record’ that at least a podium was on at the Hungarian Grand Prix

The Ducati rider had spent the start of the weekend playing down expectations around him. Marquez knows right-handers are still a problem for him, and he has a long way to go to get back to his 2025 levels.

He would go on to grab pole position and win both races at the Hungarian Grand Prix, but even then, he was still talking things down. Marquez did not think his comeback was ‘real’, as Balaton Park is less physical than upcoming tracks like Brno and Assen.

But it was a result that several people were expecting, including Marquez’s inner circle. Journalist Neil Morrison shared how his entourage were privately telling journalists that they believed a top result was on in Hungary, and Marquez was playing that down.

“This was quite a particular track. He had sort of bet on himself to get back and perform well this weekend,” said Morrison on the Paddock Pass Podcast.

“Brno is a little bit more like Mugello, not quite as physical, but in that style, lots of long right-hand corners, which have maybe been the one area he’s really been struggling in this year.

“But just to go back to him trying to put a bit of subterfuge on this weekend. I mean, everything that was coming out of his mouth on Thursday and Friday was along the lines of, ‘This isn’t going to happen.’

“But if you kind of listen to people from his entourage that were kind of speaking to journalists off the record, you were getting the impression that that was very much not the case.

“I mean, I think even back in Barcelona, a Catalan journalist was saying about how confident the Marquez camp was after the shoulder surgery,

“And then I think it was our colleague Mela Chercoles who had spoken again to someone from Marc’s entourage in Mugello, and they were saying, ‘Definitely a podium is on in Hungary,’ and then Marc was obviously trying to completely play that down.”
