VR46 Racing’s Fabio Di Giannantonio set the benchmark in the pre-qualifying practice session at the 2026 Italian Grand Prix, as he led a Ducati one-two with Francesco Bagnaia in second.

Reigning Grand Prix winner Fabio Di Giannantonio set the timing sheets alight during FP1 on Friday morning in a session that marked Marc Marquez’s return to prototype machinery following his absence at the last round of racing in Barcelona.

The Italian’s morning benchmark was quickly surpassed once things got underway in practice, with Francesco Bagnaia earning the top spot with his effort of 1:45.697.

In a similar fashion to FP1, Marquez seemingly looked off the pace as he trailed his teammate by half a second. Britain’s only representative on the grid, Cal Crutchlow, also remained outside of his three-second goal at the bottom of the time sheets.

At the midway point of the session, Fabio Quartararo brought out a red flag after coming off his Yamaha prototype at turn four. The Frenchman returned to his motorhome clutching his left arm, before emerging back on track atop his spare bike.

Upon the resumption of the session, Jack Miller brought out further yellow flags as he took a tumble at turn one. Marco Bezzecchi then laid down a new session benchmark, putting himself over six tenths ahead of the rest of the field.

Another red flag was called for with 12 minutes to go, as KTM suffered yet another engine issue as Brad Binder’s RC16 cut out while on the main straight. Marquez was on course for a personal best lap, but was forced to abort following the intervention from race control.

A late scramble in the final few minutes of the sessions saw Ducati’s stable of riders trade blows with Aprilia. In the end, Di Giannantonio further reinforced his impressive pace from the morning session to top the timings again in practice.
