Marc Marquez won a chaotic Sprint Race at the 2026 Spanish Grand Prix ahead of his Ducati teammate Francesco Bagnaia, as rain brought disorder to Jerez this Saturday.
Ducati racer Marc Marquez scored pole for the Spanish GP earlier this Saturday, as he edged LCR Honda star Johann Zarco to set the pace in a wet qualifying session. The threat of more rain also lingered before the Sprint, but the downpour did not arrive before the race started.
The win soon seemed like it awaited Marquez as he streaked clear of the field. But once the rain hit Jerez, Gresini ace Alex Marquez was on the move – only to become one of the many victims of the tricky conditions that saw Marc Marquez crash before scoring the Sprint win.

Marc Marquez made an excellent launch to enjoy a comfortable margin as he led into Turn 1, but the same could not be said for championship leader Marco Bezzecchi. The Aprilia rider got an awful launch from P4 after spinning his rear tyre on a visor tear-off, and he fell to P14.
Jorge Martin was making moves on his factory Aprilia RS-GP at the start, as he shot up from P7 and joined the fight for second behind Johann Zarco. But Martin’s Sprint would only last one lap, as the 2024 champion suffered an early reliability failure that forced him to retire.
Zarco holding on to P2 at the start of the Sprint at the Spanish GP proved to be a problem at first for Gresini’s Alex Marquez and VR46’s Fabio Di Giannantonio. But Marquez got through on Lap 2, to leave Zarco having to get his elbows out to delay Di Giannantonio a little longer.
While Zarco refused to give up after his superb qualifying performance, as the first spots of rain also started to fall, the deficiencies of the Honda RC213V proved too much for the LCR rider. Zarco often struggled through Turn 8 and kept finding himself at the mercy of his foes.
The first spots of rain hitting Jerez were not enough to stop Alex Marquez’s charge, either, as the Gresini star set about chasing down his works Ducati star brother. Marc Marquez did not have the race pace to rival Alex, who was the pace setter all throughout practice this Friday.
Marc Marquez starting to hold Alex up also started to bring Di Giannantonio into play, with the VR46 rider taking almost a full second out of the works Ducati rider’s lead with six laps to go. Alex eventually punished Marc’s caution while the grip levels continued to fall away.
The rain getting worse ultimately led to the first major mistake of the Sprint at the Spanish GP, as Pramac pilot Toprak Razgatlioglu took Aprilia test rider Lorenzo Savadori out. It was then the turn of Marc Marquez to crash as he tried to hang onto Alex and a podium finish.
Marquez was simply a victim of the conditions at the final corner, as the rain turned from spits to a full downpour. The Cervera native managed to keep his engine running and took a quick trip across the grass to switch onto his second bike and get on the wet-weather tyres.

Trying to tip-toe around the Jerez circuit on slick tyres then came back to bite Alex Marquez, as he crashed from the lead while Pramac’s Jack Miller also found the gravel – who then also got a double long lap penalty for speeding in the pit lane when he came in to change bikes.
It appeared like the conditions would then favour KTM rider Brad Binder, but even the South African tripped over shortly before the championship leader, Bezzecchi, also crashed. All the while, Marc Marquez was on the move with his wet tyres to reclaim the lead of the Sprint.
Marquez overtook factory Ducati teammate Francesco Bagnaia for the lead of the Sprint at the Spanish GP with an aggressive dive with three laps to go. Bagnaia initially tried to hang onto Marquez’s exhaust, but quickly accepted second best to his teammate in the Sprint.
