David Alonso looks to be MotoGP-bound in 2027 after signing with Honda, but fans are questioning whether he is ready to make the step up.
The Colombian stormed to Moto2 in 2025 after dominating the Moto3 championship the year before, with 14 wins from 20 races. In his rookie season, Alonso finished ninth in the standings, winning his first race at Balaton Park.

With the 19-year-old now considered a title contender in 2026, he is catching the attention of the MotoGP paddock and is being tipped for a seat on the 2027 grid.
Honda have signed Alonso for next season, partnering with 2021 MotoGP champion Fabio Quartararo in an all-new rider line-up. The Colombian is an impressive talent, but some are questioning if he is ready for the step to the premier class.

Fans discussed Alonso’s career and his trajectory to MotoGP on Reddit, with many believing that it may be too soon for him to move up from Moto2. Two users simply wrote ‘No’ when asked whether he was ready for the premier class.
“My guy is 19 and not destroying the competition in Moto2. What is the point in calling him up now? Just let him develop a bit more,” said one fan.
Many agreed that Alonso would be ready for MotoGP after some more development in Moto2. One said: “No he is not….yet. he’ll get there tho. I’m absolutely sure he’ll be a MotoGP rider,” while another wrote: “Probably not now, but eventually he’ll get there soon. He just needs to do well in Moto2 rn.”
One user does not think he is ready to move up to a factory outfit: “Yes but probably not for a factory team icl.”
One fan discussed the Colombian and his Aspar teammate, Daniel Holgado, who is also set to join MotoGP with Gresini: “Love Alonso, but he’s only got one Moto2 win.
“Both are outstanding riders, and both will sooner or later succeed at MotoGP. All that said, Alonso is a diminutive rider that could use some more time in Moto2 to further develop physically. He’s also taking a major gamble if he signs with Honda.”

David Alonso demanded a factory ride in MotoGP for 2027
Given his talent, Alonso was targeted by multiple MotoGP manufacturers. Honda won the race to sign him after a tough spell of negotiations with rivals.
Ducati were heavily linked with the Colombian, with Luigi Dall’Igna being a keen admirer. However, the Borgo Panigale outfit did not get anywhere in negotiations.

Alonso was demanding 10 times what Ducati were willing to pay, which ultimately led him down the path to Honda.
Furthermore, Ducati and Yamaha refused to give Alonso a factory seat, while Honda have taken the gamble and given him an HRC seat next to Quartararo. His demands have been quite high, so he will be under pressure to deliver the results.
