Fermin Aldeguer is joining VR46 for the 2027 MotoGP season, according to a report from the Spanish press. Aldeguer stays within the Ducati family but moves up to the second-in-command satellite team.

VR46 are about to extend their contract with Ducati after a period of uncertainty. It’s said that the opportunity to field Aldeguer, one of the most exciting young talents in the sport, helped to convince them.

Aldeguer was a contender to replace Francesco Bagnaia at the factory squad before he broke his femur over the winter, ruling him out of testing and the season opener in Thailand. The 2025 Rookie of the Year returns to action in Brazil this weekend.

Fermin Aldeguer to leave Gresini and join VR46

AS ‘confirm’ that Aldeguer will move to VR46 in 2027, racing alongside an Italian rider. Incumbent duo Franco Morbidelli and Fabio Di Giannantonio are fighting for their seats, while Valentino Rossi-backed Moto2 talent Celestino Vietti is also a contender.

VR46’s preference is to field one young rider and one veteran, so it may be that Aldeguer has ticked the first box. The news means Gresini will have to put together a brand-new line-up.

Alex Marquez is joining KTM, a move that is considered ‘certain’ even if no official announcement has arrived. Reigning world champion Marc Marquez may be holding up the rider market as negotiations with Ducati continue.

What Pablo Nieto has said about Fermin Aldeguer rumours

Speaking to AS, Nieto was complimentary of the ‘very promising’ Aldeguer but didn’t engage directly with the latest rumours.

He said: “Aldeguer is one of the two riders with the most potential in MotoGP, because of his characteristics, his talent, everything. In his first year, he already won a race, the Indonesian Grand Prix, and he has a very promising future.”

As journalist Mela Chercoles notes, Pedro Acosta is the rider that Nieto is referring to. VR46 tried to sign the KTM sensation for 2027, but he is joining Ducati instead.

Still, Aldeguer represents an exciting plan-b for a team that arguably needs an injection of life after being overshadowed by Gresini last season.
