Carlos Ezpeleta has stated that Marc Marquez’s 2025 season was ‘the biggest comeback in sports’.

The MotoGP Sports Entertainment Group have spoken highly of Marc Marquez after his ‘unspeakable’ display of dominance in the 2025 MotoGP season.

It is widely known that Marquez had to undergo multiple surgeries between the 2020 and 2024 seasons after a career-changing crash during the opening round of the 2020 season at Jerez.

As well as his injury issues, Marquez also experienced problems with his Honda RC213V, as when he returned to full-time racing in 2021, he found that his Honda was not as competitive as in the past.

After two further years struggling on the Honda, Marquez made his way to Gresini Ducati in 2024, before signing for the factory Ducati team in 2025 where he dominated the sport and won his ninth World Championship.

Carlos Ezpeleta on Marc Marquez’s ‘unspeakable’ comeback

The MotoGP Chief Sporting Officer, Carlos Ezpeleta, appeared on Business of Sport, and discussed the comeback story of Marquez and the dominance he showed during the 2025 season.

He went on to claim that after equalling Valentino Rossi’s achievements last year, Marquez now has his sights on Giacomo Agostini’s record for the 2026 season.

Ezpeleta said, “A lot of people say that it is the biggest comeback in the sport, but I continuously tell people it is the biggest comeback in sports, period.

“Because other athletes or sportsmen have come back to win a trophy, a tennis masters, a boxing match, or whatever it is, but to completely dominate after five years of probably the deepest pit that any athlete has been in, he had four surgeries, lost his eyesight, recovered it.

“It is truly unspeakable what Marc did last year, and not to just win, but to win in that fashion. These guys are the best in the world at what they do, they do pretty well for themselves economically, but it is not just like, ‘I am going to play another football game’.

“It is, ‘I am going to put my life on the line for another whole year, and another whole year again’. Having done that unsuccessfully for five years, and then to come back and dominate the sport… Marc’s career is far from over, but the achievement is really huge, after tying his rival and now looking this year to equal the historical record is really big.”
