Aprilia’s exhaust drew interest during a private test at Jerez with KTM and Yamaha on Wednesday, as the three MotoGP rivals ran their 850cc bikes for the 2027 regulations.

MotoGP will introduce a vast regulatory overhaul next year, with the new engines carrying a reduction in capacity from 1,000cc to 850cc the headline change. The premier class will also ban all ride height devices and incorporate further aerodynamics restrictions from next year.

Aprilia, KTM and Yamaha have rented Jerez for a three-day test this week to trial their 850cc bikes in their current state of development. The test also offers the manufacturers their first chance to trial the tyres that Pirelli is now developing ahead of it replacing Michelin in 2027.

Only Aprilia and KTM’s test riders can take part in the test due to their concessions ranking. Lorenzo Savadori has been tasked with testing Aprilia’s 850cc RS-GP at Jerez, while Dani Pedrosa and Pol Espargaro are working on KTM’s 2026 RC16 as well as their bike for 2027.

Aprilia’s ‘long and thin’ exhaust on their 2027 MotoGP bike at Jerez attracts interest

The 2027 MotoGP regulations have the potential to reshape the order of the field, as teams will have to adapt without the ride height and holeshot devices that are defining the current era. MotoGP has designed the 850cc regulations to make bikes slower than the 1,000cc era.

Aprilia appear to think there might be a lot of potential to find performance in the 850cc era through their exhaust, though. According to a report from TodoCircuito, eyes were drawn to the exhaust on Aprilia’s developmental 2027 bike on the first day of the private test at Jerez.

The RS-GP ‘attracted attention’ on Wednesday, after Aprilia revealed an ‘extremely long and thin’ exhaust. Aprilia have designed their exhaust in such a way to try to optimise the power delivery of their 850cc engine, which will run on 100% non-fossil, sustainable fuels in 2027.

Aprilia have focused on recording data with their 850cc bike at Jerez during their private test with Yamaha and KTM, which they will use to refine their package ahead of the official 2027 test at Brno on June 22. MotoGP will also stage a test at the Red Bull Ring on September 21.

Honda have also started testing their 850cc bike for the 2027 MotoGP regulations. But the Japanese constructor chose to stage their maiden outing in Sepang with test rider Takaaki Nakagami, rather than joining their rivals at Jerez for the three-day test from March 11-13.
