As a veteran of the category and the most successful rider currently on the grid, Marc Marquez has advised MotoGP rookie Diogo Moreira to remain patient in his debut year, despite the Spaniard highlighting that he hasn’t utilised the same sort of advice in his own career.

There aren’t many better people inside the MotoGP paddock to advise the sport’s next generation than Marc Marquez.

Even as a rookie himself, the Spaniard showcased an unprecedented level of talent on two wheels, and it didn’t take him long at all to stamp his authority over some of the biggest legends in MotoGP history during his rookie season.

Marquez stunned the Grand Prix motorcycle racing world with his unique riding style and claimed his very first victory in the premier class during what was only his second race weekend in MotoGP.

He would then go on to follow it up with five more Grand Prix victories on his way to the championship crown, much to the delight of future rival Jack Miller, who found pleasure in Marquez ‘spicing’ the premier class up.

Marc Marquez tells Diogo Moreira to have ‘patience’ during rookie MotoGP campaign

In a recent interview with Marca that took place during a sponsor event, Marquez was asked if he had any advice for Diogo Moreira, as well as Jose Antonio Rueda, following their steps up the Grand Prix motorcycle racing ladder.

Both Moreira and Rueda won the world championships in Moto2 and Moto3, respectively, last year, with the former securing a premier class ride with LCR Honda for 2026.

In response to the query, Marquez said, “They are two rookies who are coming off championships. Something I haven’t had in my career: patience.

“Sometimes you stop in the pits, and you’re 20th, but little by little, you’ll gain momentum. Like what happened to David Alonso. They should keep at it; they have talent to spare, they are champions.

“They have a great example in my brother Alex, who struggled but became a champion or was winning in MotoGP.”

The factory Ducati rider’s younger brother, Alex Marquez, has had a successful career in Grand Prix motorcycle racing that has been defined by a certain kind of grit and resilience to keep going.

It took the Gresini star three attempts to secure a world title in Moto3, and he had to wait another five years before becoming successful in Moto2 after that.

In terms of MotoGP, Alex languished for the first five years of his tenancy in the premier class before having a breakout season in 2025 and emerging as one of the most competitive riders on the grid.

Diogo Moreira had an impressive MotoGP debut at the Thailand Grand Prix

Moreira’s career as a premier class rider got off to a fairly impressive start last weekend, with the young Brazilian seeing the chequered flag in P13 in both the Sprint race and Grand Prix.

He ended the longer format race five seconds behind LCR teammate Johann Zarco, and collected the first world championship points of his MotoGP career.

Keen-eyed journalist Peter Bom also spotted Moreira utilising a riding style that has never been seen before in premier class riding, which may have aided his quest to finish within the top-15 riders.

It seemed to have been an evolution of Valentino Rossi’s famous ‘Doctor’s Dangle’, but instead of taking one leg off his bike upon entry to the braking zones, Moreira would instead thrust both legs away from his prototype.
