The first day of MotoGP’s 2026 pre-season Buriram test has come to an end, and it was Alex Marquez who ended the opening day on top of the time sheets.
At the last pre-season test, it was Alex Marquez who topped the time sheets at the Sepang test after three days of testing at the Malaysian circuit.
For the second pre-season test in 2026, the headlines continue to be dominated by the rider market, with reports suggesting that Francesco Bagnaia will join Aprilia in 2027.
Also, for the first time as an Aprilia rider, Jorge Martin took to the Buriram International Circuit during the opening day of the final pre-season test.
Alex Marquez tops day one of MotoGP’s 2026 Buriram test
In the opening session of the day, there were positive signs for the 2022 and 2023 MotoGP World Champion, Francesco Bagnaia, as he topped the time sheets in the morning.
However, the times began to fall in the afternoon session as Alex Marquez set a 1:29.262, which was five tenths slower than the pole position time set by Marc Marquez at the 2025 Grand Prix of Thailand.
It was Marc Marquez who ended the day in second place behind his younger brother after he improved his time in the afternoon. However, in the morning session, he crashed twice, once on his first flying lap and once whilst following Maverick Vinales.
On his return to the Buriram International Circuit, Jorge Martin was in second place in the morning session on the Aprilia RS-GP. But in the afternoon session, he did not improve his time and plummeted down the order to 13th.
After difficulties for Yamaha at the Sepang test, the Japanese manufacturer has continued to struggle during the 2026 pre-season tests.
Jack Miller was the top Yamaha rider as he ended the day in 17th place on the Pramac Racing M1; he was closely followed by the factory Yamaha riders Fabio Quartararo and Alex Rins.
Are Marc Marquez’s crashes at the Buriram test a sign he’s reverted to his old habits?
