Jack Miller has spoken out about the news that the Australian Grand Prix will move away from Phillip Island in 2027, calling it amazing for the country.
After nearly three decades, Phillip Island will drop off the MotoGP calendar next year. The circuit has been a permanent staple of the premier class since 1997 and is hugely popular among fans and riders.
MotoGP extended the track’s contract in 2025 by another year, but Dorna, now MotoGP Sports Entertainment, had been pushing to move the Australian Grand Prix to another circuit.

Phillip Island has been criticised for being outdated, with MotoGP exploring the idea of street circuits under Liberty Media’s ownership. The Victorian government rejected the sport’s proposal to move to Albert Park, which has hosted Formula 1 races since 1996.
The authorities had no intention of leaving Phillip Island, but MotoGP have continued to explore alternatives. The Bend was an option for MotoGP and was in ‘advanced’ talks, but the premier class will instead move to an all-new street circuit in Adelaide.

Jack Miller says Australian Grand Prix moving to Adelaide from Phillip Island is ‘amazing news’
The news marks history for MotoGP, but it has received wide criticism from fans and key figures alike. Fans think leaving Phillip Island is a ‘horrible mistake’, but Pramac rider Miller is seeing the positives.
MotoGP’s only Australian rider appeared at a press conference after Adelaide was announced on the calendar from 2027. He thinks the move is ‘really cool’ for the city and the country, as it will attract an international audience.
“I mean, amazing news for Australian motorsport all round, I think,” he said via FOX Sports Australia. “Obviously, Phillip Island, a place that’s extremely special to me, my family, to everyone involved.
Do you agree with Jack Miller’s comments on the Adelaide street circuit? 🤔
“But, it’s also something really cool for Australia, I believe. We’ve got a lot of places in this country to visit and a lot of things to see.
“A lot of beautiful cities and I think Adelaide, being able to have the MotoGP here, being able to bring that international audience here.
“I’ve been a big fan of the state for a long time, coming to race at The Bend a couple of times, seems to put on a great show out there, and I really look forward to seeing what the city of Adelaide does for MotoGP.”

Valentino Rossi said it would be a ‘great shame’ to lose Phillip Island from MotoGP
Miller’s comments contrast with several other MotoGP figures, who have criticised the decision to leave Phillip Island. Valentino Rossi, who won the Australian GP eight times across his motorcycle racing career, hoped that the circuit would stay on the calendar.
He said via Speedcafe at the Bathurst 24-Hour race, in which he finished third: “It’s a shame because Phillip Island is a piece of history of MotoGP.
“I raced in Eastern Creek the first year and after ’97, we moved to Phillip Island. It’s a fantastic track, it’s really special, and it’s different than the other track.
“We can say that it’s a little bit like Bathurst, so it’s a great shame if they stop with Phillip Island. Phillip Island has a great charisma. It’s a track that you never forget, so I hope that they continue in Phillip Island.”
