New Tech3 investor Pierre Gasly once pinpointed what F1 ‘lacks’ compared to MotoGP

Formula 1 star Pierre Gasly has joined the Guenther Steiner-led consortium that has taken over the Tech3 outfit from Herve Poncharal, and the Grand Prix winner has previously nailed exactly what MotoGP excels in over its four-wheeled counterpart.

Despite the recent rumours of Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen getting involved with owning a MotoGP outfit, Pierre Gasly has beaten them to the punch after being named as one of the investors in Tech3.

Guenther Steiner has finally assumed control of Tech3 after news of Herve Poncharal’s sale to the former F1 team principal was confirmed last September.

MotoGP fans weren’t too happy about Steiner’s involvement in the team following his sub-optimal management of the Haas F1 outfit, but it is understood that his deal has meant that the Tech3 outfit remains as one of the 11 teams on the grid.

Enea Bastianini and Maverick Vinales are continuing with the team in the Italian executive’s maiden season of premier class management.

Pierre Gasly once said that Formula 1 ‘lacks’ exciting overtakes like MotoGP

During an interview following his maiden F1 victory at the 2020 Italian Grand Prix, Gasly was asked about his interest in the premier class, and more specifically, what the pinnacle of single-seater motorsports could learn from MotoGP.

He replied, “Formula 1 lacks overtaking like in MotoGP. I’m not saying our races are boring.

“The fact is that I would like to see the single-seaters closer in races. In fact, I would like there to be more duels and battles like in MotoGP, which I consider very spectacular.”

He’s certainly not wrong. During the 2025 F1 season, there were approximately 30.9 overtakes on average at every Grand Prix throughout the year.

In MotoGP, on the other hand, there can be as many as 100 overtakes in a single race, given the closer proximity of wheel-to-wheel racing that occurs in the sport.

What’s more, some F1 races don’t even have more than a handful of actual on-track overtakes due to the limitations that the dirty air provides

For example, at the 2025 Monaco Grand Prix, there was just one genuine on-track overtake that occurred over the entirety of the 78-lap race, down from just four in the year prior.

Pierre Gasly is also close friends with MotoGP world champion Fabio Quartararo

Gasly is also a close confidante of fellow Frenchman Fabio Quartararo, highlighting his tight-knit relationship with the 2021 world champion in an interview from 2020.

Quartararo was leading the MotoGP standings at the time, while riding for a satellite Yamaha team, and the F1 star revealed his desire for more independent constructors to challenge for a title in his own respective sport.

He said, via GPFans, “I do hope we can see something a bit similar to MotoGP where my good friend Fabio Quartararo, for example, is in a private team that can fight for championships.

“Scoring some pole positions and winning some races, I think that will be amazing if we can see something similar in Formula 1.”
