Francesco Bagnaia has been an integral part of Ducati’s success in recent years, and the two-time MotoGP world champion has had plenty of moments that called for celebration.

Since his premier class debut in 2019, Francesco Bagnaia has transformed from a promising talent into a staple of the MotoGP grid.

The Italian rider ended Ducati’s 15-year title drought in 2022, marking a shift in the sport’s competitive landscape and kickstarting Borgo Panigale’s four-year domination of the riders’ championship.

Bagnaia’s riding style is centred on smooth, metronomic movements that often leave his rivals struggling to find an opening.

Despite suffering from several issues during the 2025 season that hindered his progress in the MotoGP standings, Bagnaia is still one of the best riders on the grid and has plenty of highlights to show for it.

Where did Francesco Bagnaia make his MotoGP debut?

Francesco Bagnaia made his MotoGP debut at the 2019 Qatar Grand Prix, having secured a seat with Ducati satellite team Pramac Racing after his Moto2 world championship feat in 2018.

Unfortunately, his maiden race in the premier class lasted just nine laps. The Italian was forced to retire from the race prematurely due to issues with the handling of his bike.

Bagnaia’s first trip to the top step of the MotoGP podium came at the 2021 Aragon Grand Prix, and the Italian rider did it in style.

Taking pole position on the day prior by over three tenths of a second, Bagnaia fended off a late attack from Marc Marquez to take the chequered flag in front of the pack for the first time in his career.

A last-lap duel with the now seven-time world champion ensued, but Bagnaia kept his cool as he answered every one of Marquez’s advances.

The winning margin was just over half a second, and the two riders were joined on the podium by the reigning MotoGP world champion at the time, Joan Mir.

The Italian rider showcased his impressive one-lap pace during his very first race weekend as part of the factory Ducati MotoGP team.

Bagnaia replaced the outgoing Andrea Dovizioso ahead of the 2021 MotoGP season, and wasted no time in making his mark at the team by securing his first pole position in the premier class at the 2021 Qatar Grand Prix.

Francesco Bagnaia on his MotoGP future

“I want to continue with Ducati. My ambition is to end my career with them.”

He pipped the eventual 2021 MotoGP world champion, Fabio Quartararo, to the front spot of the grid in Lusail, but was unable to convert the pole position into a Grand Prix victory after being bested on track by Maverick Vinales and his replacement at Pramac, Johann Zarco.

Despite putting on a defensive masterclass, he was unable to keep the pacy Yamaha rider behind. Bagnaia became vulnerable after Vinales eventually got the better of him, which allowed Zarco to snatch the second spot on the podium away from him.

Bagnaia’s first top-three finish in MotoGP came during his sophomore season in the category, at the 2020 San Marino Grand Prix.

Starting from sixth on the grid, #63 was able to get the better of his mentor and MotoGP icon Valentino Rossi on his way to a second-place finish at Misano.

The rider from Turin also set the fastest lap of the race, the first of his career, and only narrowly secured the runners-up spot after taking the chequered flag by less than a tenth to the eventual premier class champion that year, Mir.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic response, the MotoGP grid congregated at Misano a week later. Bagnaia qualified one place higher in fifth, but was unable to replicate his podium heroics after he crashed out of the race with seven laps to go.

Where did Francesco Bagnaia win his first MotoGP Sprint race?

With Sprint races being added to MotoGP race weekends for the 2023 season, Bagnaia became the format’s inaugural winner at the 2023 Portuguese Grand Prix.

He was pipped to pole position by Marquez by less than a tenth of a second, but the factory Ducati man’s race pace was far superior.

Who was the most surprising rider during Sprint Races in 2025?

Bagnaia took the chequered flag in Portimao after 12 laps to be crowned the winner of MotoGP’s first Sprint race, and replicate his impressive form in the Grand Prix on the following day.

The perfect start to the new season also marked his first victories of a second consecutive title-winning campaign.

Following the conclusion of the 2025 premier class season, Bagnaia sits third in the all-time list of Sprint race wins with 13. Only Marquez (15) and Jorge Martin (16) stand above him.

Where did Francesco Bagnaia win his first MotoGP riders’ championship?

2022 was the first year that Bagnaia etched his name into Grand Prix motorcycle racing history, and he did it in dramatic style.

After crashing out of the German Grand Prix, nobody thought that #63 was in contention for the title as he faced a 91-point deficit to the reigning world champion, Quartararo.

However, four wins on the bounce saw his title hopes revived, and with five rounds remaining, Bagnaia found himself just 10 points behind the Frenchman in the riders’ championship.

Despite crashing out of the following race in Japan, his back-to-back third-place finishes in Thailand and Australia were succeeded by a victory in Malaysia.

Bagnaia took the chequered flag in ninth place in Valencia, and that was all he needed to secure his maiden world championship in the premier class.

The feat was a historic one. The Italian set a new record for the biggest overturn in deficit for a world title, as well as being the first member of Valentino Rossi’s rider academy to become a premier class champion and only the second ever rider to do it for Ducati.

Where did Francesco Bagnaia take his best win in MotoGP?

Bagnaia’s victory at the 2022 Spanish Grand Prix in Jerez was nothing short of a masterclass. After a rocky start to the season, he silenced critics by shattering the lap record to take pole position by a massive margin.

Despite a painful shoulder injury, #63 led every single lap. He withstood relentless pressure from Fabio Quartararo, which required Bagnaia to be absolutely perfect as he managed soaring tyre temperatures.

The win was statistically perfect, securing a Grand Slam with pole, the fastest lap, and every lap led. This performance proved the Ducati GP22 was finally optimised for his smooth, high-corner-speed riding style.

Jerez served as the critical turning point for his championship campaign, sparking the momentum he needed to accomplish his historic 91-point comeback.
