Ducati will demote one of their MotoGP riders if he doesn’t improve his championship position in 2026

Ducati’s MotoGP roster for 2027 is entirely unknown at this stage. It’s not even clear which satellite teams will be part of it.

VR46 are apparently talking to Aprilia, but this is just a rumour for now. Gresini have little reason to consider a change after finishing runner-up last year and scoring four Grand Prix victories.

Marc Marquez is considering his options but is likely to re-sign, while Fermin Aldeguer is central to Ducati’s future too. Aldeguer may join Marquez in red or remain a satellite rider.

Alex Marquez isn’t a contender for a factory move despite earning a factory bike on the back of an outstanding 2025. The other three riders – Francesco Bagnaia, Fabio Di Giannantonio and Franco Morbidelli – are all fighting for their futures.

Fabio Di Giannantonio will lose Ducati factory bike if he can’t improve on 2025 form

Di Giannantonio was one of the three GP25 riders last season alongside Marquez and Bagnaia. While all the focus was on the struggles of the #63, he still outscored ‘Diggia’ by 26 points.

The VR46 rider scored nine podiums across the two formats but finished a year without a victory. ‘Everything is on the line’ for Di Giannantonio next year, according to Speedweek.

If he wants to retain a factory-spec bike for 2027, then he will have to improve on P6 in the championship. Given the progress made by KTM and Aprilia, and the expected growth of Aldeguer, that will be difficult.

Aldeguer’s contract contains a performance clause that could earn him a factory bike in his third year. Di Giannantonio could be the victim if that clause is activated, and there are ‘strong indications’ that this will happen.

Franco Morbidelli’s future at VR46 is also in doubt

Di Giannantonio also faces external threats, with most riders still desperate to ride a Ducati in 2027 despite the regulation changes.

On the other side of the garage, Morbidelli is under pressure. Valentino Rossi decided not to pay for his academy graduate to ride a GP26 next season due to his inconsistent results.

Morbidelli signed a new one-year contract but of the six Desmosedici riders next year, his stock is arguably the lowest.

VR46 are interested in Pedro Acosta and if he joins, the two riders could spend the year scrapping for the remaining seat.
