Fermin Aldeguer has had a fantastic rookie season in MotoGP in 2025, winning his first race before his close rival Pedro Acosta.

The Spaniard was signed by Ducati on a two-year deal, with the option of a further two years, in 2025. Joining satellite team Gresini, he made an instant impression.

Aldeguer finished eighth in the standings in 2025 with three podiums. He used the GP24 to his advantage as he won his maiden MotoGP Grand Prix at Mandalika.

His performances earned Aldeguer the Rookie of the Year award, and he will be looking to have an even stronger year in 2026. However, his hometown friend and rival Acosta had the better of him in 2025.

Jorge Lorenzo says Fermin Aldeguer needs to be ‘obsessed’ like Pedro Acosta

Acosta may still be waiting for his first win in the premier class, but he has had a brilliant sophomore season. Collecting 12 podiums across the year, including Sprints, he finished 2025 in P4 in the championship.

The KTM rider found confidence on the RC16 and was regularly challenging at the front. But despite this, Acosta feels 2025 has been a ‘wasted year of life’ – he wants to be winning races and eventually the championship.

For MotoGP legend Jorge Lorenzo, Aldeguer does not have the same obsession as his rival. He thinks that the Spaniard can become a world champion, but he is not a ‘competitive animal’ just yet.

Lorenzo told Moto.IT: “That’s the difference. Aldeguer is very strong, he can become world champion, but in my opinion he’s not a competitive animal yet. His obsession isn’t that strong.

“Instead, the only reason Acosta wakes up in the morning is to become champion, and he will be. When you’re obsessed and winning is the only solution you have in life, in the end you do it. Ayrton Senna was the same.”

How is Fermin Aldeguer’s relationship with Pedro Acosta?

The two Murcia natives grew up alongside each other and raced against one another throughout their junior careers. Acosta would make it to MotoGP a year before Aldeguer with KTM, finishing sixth in his debut season.

Aldeguer thinks Acosta had the better career before making it to the premier class. He will now be determined to fight his fellow compatriot and reach the top of MotoGP.

Aldeguer ‘distanced’ himself from Acosta because he felt that their personalities clashed. The pair’s relationship has become fractured over the years, but they maintain that there is no real problem between them.

Aldeguer described Acosta as just his rival, saying that he does not have a problem with the KTM rider. But he says it is hard to have friends in the paddock when they are all chasing the goal of being a champion.
