Francesco Bagnaia’s ‘onboard cameras’ confirm the secret change Ducati have made to his bike

Francesco Bagnaia made a change that seemed to fix everything at the 2025 Japanese Grand Prix, and his confidence is back.

He enters the Indonesian Grand Prix at Mandalika as a feared opponent once more, after dominating last time out at Motegi. Ducati will be relieved that their superstar rider is showing his best form again, while Marc Marquez may be worried about what his teammate might be able to achieve now.

There isn’t much Bagnaia can do other than try and find a way to beat Alex Marquez to second in the MotoGP standings from 66 points behind. He needs to have a very good end to the campaign, but it isn’t impossible.

Bagnaia shared a heartfelt message with Marquez and congratulated him for being ‘amazing’ in 2025 after he wrapped up a seventh title. It quashed any rumours suggesting Ducati favoured Marquez over Bagnaia this season, and showed that the Italian doesn’t feel that way.

Francesco Bagnaia’s ‘onboard cameras’ confirmed Ducati gave him Franco Morbidelli’s bike

After his breakthrough result, Bagnaia nearly cried at Motegi, highlighting just how much of a struggle he has been through. He went 14 races without climbing onto the top step of the podium, matching his longest run since he joined Ducati.

According to Louis Suddaby, speaking on the Paddock Pass Podcast, onboard footage confirmed that after the San Marino Grand Prix at the Misano test, Bagnaia might have used Franco Morbidelli’s GP24 bike in a bid to compare it with the GP25.

“I heard from some on the ground in Misano that the onboard cameras on that bike that Pecco was riding in the Misano tests were indeed Morbidelli’s onboard cameras,” he said.

Neil Morrison suggested that it was also something that the two-time champion ‘didn’t dent’ when questioned by a journalist.

“Yeah, because Dave, in the press conference, Pecco was actually asked by, I think Crash.net’s Indonesian reporter, Derry, whether he had ridden Franco Morbidelli’s GP24 at the Misano test to try and help and compare with his current bike.

“Or his bike currently, at the San Marino GP. To kind of back-to-back with them. And he didn’t deny it, let’s say it like that.”

Why Francesco Bagnaia should be the favourite at the Indonesian Grand Prix

If Bagnaia is back on a GP24 machine that he feels comfortable with and is able to push harder than he has all season, he’ll be desperate to make up for lost time.

Marquez already has his title wrapped up and will be preparing for 2026 now, as he bids to go back-to-back for the first time in seven years.

That could involve testing new parts or setups in a bid to gather more information for the start of next season, as Bagnaia tries to find a way back into the top two of the standings.

As Marquez has done all season, he has mitigated and avoided taking risks well. Finishing the campaign without any injuries or close calls would be a success and leave him in good standing for the future.

Bagnaia still needs to convince everyone that his Motegi showing wasn’t a one-off and should continue to take more risks than anyone else.
