Marc Marquez’s assistant doesn’t ‘like’ one aspect of his personality, ‘told him a thousand times’

Marc Marquez and his close circle have been through a lot between his last MotoGP title with Honda in 2019 and his seventh crown with Ducati in 2025.

The Spaniard suffered a broken right humerus in a crash at Jerez in 2020. Rushing his recovery, he was forced to sit out the season, beginning a long period of surgeries and injury setbacks.

After three years of struggle, the Ant of Cervera decided to leave his huge contract at Honda in 2024 and join the Ducati family, signing with Gresini. Marquez earned no salary with the satellite team; he knew he could be champion again on their bike.

Even though he returned to the top step of the podium with the team, retirement still hung over him. Marquez’s father recalled how he ‘ran out of steam’ at Silverstone last year; he had to join the factory team to win the title.

Marquez gave Ducati an ultimatum for 2025 as he threatened to leave if he did not race in red. The Borgo Panigale outfit made the best decision to sign him alongside Francesco Bagnaia, as he has dominated the season to win his seventh premier class championship.

Marc Marquez’s assistant does not ‘like’ how he punishes himself after making a mistake

Marquez has displayed an incredible level of consistency in 2025, winning 25 races thus far, including Sprints. He has rarely been beaten on outright performance, with his own mistakes costing him more points.

Crashes in Austin and Jerez denied him the chance to win the title before Motegi. Despite his brilliance in 2025, the Spaniard remains harsh on himself when he makes mistakes, with Marquez being apologetic to Ducati after his DNF at COTA.

The 32-year-old has been pushing himself to the extreme to claim his seventh MotoGP title, with Ducati staff estimating that he lost over three kilos in the winter, as per Autosport.

Speaking to Marquez’s assistant Jose Luis Martinez, the Ducati rider’s heavy preparations lead him to be self-critical when things do not go his way; something that his confidant does not ‘like’ about him: “When he makes a mistake, he punishes himself too much,” said Martinez.

“One thing I don’t like about him, and I’ve told him a thousand times, is that he punishes himself too much when he makes a mistake. I understand it drives him to do what he does and be who he is. But I suffer seeing it, and I try to convince him not to be so hard on himself.”

Marc Marquez breaks numerous MotoGP records as his ‘GOAT’ status increases

Through all his injury setbacks and self-criticism, it has all been worth it as the Ducati rider has returned to the top of the premier class. Marquez has now equalled Valentino Rossi’s record for seven MotoGP titles and nine Grand Prix championships.

Marquez says it is an ‘honour’ to level Rossi as he also becomes the oldest MotoGP champion. He is five fastest laps and 17 race wins away from beating more of the Italian’s records.

MotoGP GOAT candidate Wayne Rainey says Marquez’s racing talent has never been ‘seen before’. The Spaniard has been almost unbeatable in 2025, and he stands a good chance of repeating his success next season.

Johann Zarco backs Marquez to beat Rossi’s titles in 2026, but does not think he will have as dominant a season. With Ducati’s superiority in MotoGP, it will be hard for anyone to dethrone the 32-year-old.
