Mat Oxley says MotoGP have made a ‘weird’ Pirelli decision when considering the 2027 rule changes

Marc Marquez might have another year of dominance awaiting him next season before the regulations change for 2027.

He and Ducati have been in imperious MotoGP form this season, and one thing they have managed to master is the Michelin tyres. For 2027, things are all changed, though.

Pirelli are coming in, which could completely transform the outlook of the racing. There will be a complete overhaul for riders.

One Yamaha chief is worried about the 2027 regulations and fears that their new tyre supplier won’t be able to match the job Michelin has done.

They’re not completely inexperienced, having supplied the World Superbike Championship for a long time, too.

On another note, Yamaha are doing something ‘pretty crazy’ behind the scenes in an attempt to get back to winning form, however, they’ll start from square one again soon.

Mat Oxley says MotoGP have made a ‘weird’ decision with Pirelli for the 2027 rule changes

Casey Stoner has pinpointed the issue ‘nobody can see’ for 2027 and fears that the racing will suffer under the new rules.

The last time the regulations were adjusted so dramatically was back in 2012, when the size of the engines went from 800cc to 1000cc.

Now, they’re reverting back to 850cc units, but nobody quite knows how that will have an effect on the racing.

Speaking on X (formerly known as Twitter), MotoGP journalist Mat Oxley shared what Pirelli have told him about a ‘weird’ decision for 2027.

“Lots of MotoGP bikes going to the barriers these days, ie Bastianini yesterday, Acosta at Balaton Minimoto Park,” he said.

“The big question is will the 2027 rules reduce corner speeds? Pirelli told me they haven’t been asked to consider this factor while designing their MotoGP tyres. Weird.”

Why Pirelli should be able to make a good MotoGP tyre for 2027

Pirelli will have had plenty of time to research and develop some strong rubber for 2027, given they have had so much success in other championships.

They know what makes a good tyre, and it’s why they’re still Formula 1’s supplier, as well as having been the main World Superbike Championship rubber suppliers since 2004.

It’s that experience, combined with a fresh start for the new regulations anyway, that will help them to define a new era of MotoGP.

The issue is that with a change in supplier, there is going to be inevitable criticism. There will be differences from Michelin, and it may take some adjustment for the riders.

Some might even find that they lose all their speed with it, but adapting and overcoming those issues will play a big role in who comes out on top in 2027. Those who do so quickest could win a title.
