Ducati warned Marc Marquez might now be creating ‘exactly’ the same situation that ruined Honda

Marc Marquez has just sealed his seventh consecutive MotoGP double and is well on course to break some incredible records in 2025.

The Spaniard came into the year expecting a fierce battle with Ducati stalwart Francesco Bagnaia, but the two-time champion has faltered.

Marquez has been the main beneficiary of a lack of competition and has slowly grown into his new role. Mistakes have been eradicated, and he’s back in prime form.

After the Hungarian Grand Prix, he leads the MotoGP standings by a whopping 175 points with eight races left. He is all but confirmed as the oldest champion in the sport’s history.

An ‘immaculate’ Marquez made the difference for his team at Balaton Park, as others struggled to find consistency over one lap during Saturday’s qualifying session. It helped him to land another pole position.

Then Marquez avoided a strategy choice that his rivals could not, and romped to a seventh win in a row. He’s just three shy of matching his consecutive victories record from 2014.

Ducati face ‘exactly’ the same Marc Marquez situation that went wrong at Honda

MotoGP fans said the same thing after Marquez’s eighth pole of 2025, and believe that he might be the greatest rider of all time.

Despite Aprilia and KTM’s recent improvements, it’s hard to see them overcoming the championship leader without a significant mistake any time soon.

Marquez has lost ‘explosiveness’ since his best season at Honda, but that might be the least of his team’s worries. The Race’s Simon Patterson believes that Ducati need to be wary of following the same pattern their Japanese rivals did with their current rider.

“I think Ducati need to be very, very careful in the next 18 months. Because this looks like the beginnings of what went wrong at Honda,” he said.

“This looks like the beginnings of following the lead of an alien and allowing him to take. I don’t even think Marc is leading the bike development, because I don’t think that’s what this is. I don’t think this is about bike development.

“I think this is a rider who is completely uncaring about the problems that other people face on the bike. As a result, it’s going in a direction that is potentially unrideable for everyone else. It’s exactly what happened at Honda.”

How Marc Marquez broke his own MotoGP record at the Hungarian Grand Prix

With many records set to tumble between now and the end of the season, fans are bound to be inundated with numbers relating to the six-time champion.

However, at Balaton Park, Marquez reached a special milestone just under two-thirds of the way through the campaign.

Now sitting on 455 points, he has achieved the most points that he has ever had in a season, beating his tally of 420 from 2019. With more races and sprint races to assist, it’s clear to see why he has beaten the milestone so soon.

A Ducati crew chief perfectly summed up Marquez and believes he is more ‘complete’ than ever in 2025. It would explain his killer consistency and speed.
