Fabio Quartararo admits he couldn’t match Marc Marquez in one vital area even if he joined Ducati

Marc Marquez is romping to the 2025 MotoGP title. After yet another perfect weekend at the Sachsenring, he leads his brother Alex by 83 points.

Marquez is dominating MotoGP once again as the second-oldest rider on the grid. A first championship since 2019 looks a foregone conclusion.

The Spaniard holds the record for most wins in a single season with 13, but if he repeats his current success rate – seven out of 11 – in the second half of 2025, he will break it. Teammate Francesco Bagnaia is 147 points behind and has only beaten him on pure pace in three competitive sessions.

Pramac’s Miguel Oliveira says Jorge Martin could challenge Marquez had he stayed at Ducati and remained fit. And speaking to AS, Yamaha rider Fabio Quartararo backed himself against the six-time champion – in certain conditions.

Fabio Quartararo thinks he’d struggle against Marc Marquez in wet conditions

Quartararo was asked for his thoughts on Marquez’s ‘path’ to the title. He says that nobody has reached the level of the Ant Cervera in the past decade.

Indeed, since the end of the 2015 season, Marquez has only once been beaten when fully fit. And even then, he was on a year-old Ducati at Gresini.

Quartararo says Marquez scores 99 out of 100 for every attribute, whereas his rivals have discernible weaknesses.

“When I talk about him, I’m not talking about him to make him look good or bad. I don’t think there’s anyone at Marquez’s level right now. And I’m not just talking about now, but in the last ten years.

“He’s good at everything: in the wet, on dry land, with one arm in trouble, with the other… He’s fast in all circumstances, and he’s an example, because there are things I struggle with, like when there are patches of wet weather.

“I’m not as comfortable as he is, and he’s good at everything. It’s like FIFA [a football video game], where you can have all your players with the 99.”

Discussing what ‘level’ he could reach on the same bike, Quartararo admitted he’d struggle to keep up in wet conditions. Marquez produced an epic performance in a wet Sprint at the Sachsenring last weekend, rallying from P5 to take the win on the last lap.

“In unusual conditions, he’s almost unbeatable, but in dry conditions, we could give him some problems,” Quartararo said. “In terms of pure speed, I have the potential to be very fast.”

Fabio Quartararo identifies the one thing that hurts more than crashes at Yamaha

Quartararo is the only rider, other than Marquez, to score a pole position in 2025. He’s scored four to the Spaniard’s seven.

That’s a mighty feat on a Yamaha bike that currently ranks bottom of the constructors’ championship. Pushing hard to counter the M1’s limitations, Quartararo has fallen in three of the eight races he’s started from the front.

But he says not having the machinery to compete with Marquez is more painful than these crashes.

“[It hurts] quite a bit more,” he said. “It’s a somewhat strange and difficult year, because I know my speed on a single lap and I know the problems we have to be good in the race.

“Our bike is very delicate depending on the conditions. From one day to the next, depending on the cold or heat, the bike is completely different.”

Quartararo has threatened to leave Yamaha unless they deliver a more competitive bike next year. El Diablo, who hasn’t won a race since 2022, is approaching the end of his contract.
