Ducati rider Marc Marquez is on for his fifth hat-trick of the 2025 MotoGP season in only 11 rounds, after recovering to win a wet Sprint Race at the German Grand Prix.

The King of the Sachsenring once again proved why he is the master of the Saxony track this Saturday, as Marquez scored pole for the German GP before then winning his 10th Sprint of the season. The Spaniard will now strive to secure his seventh Grand Prix victory on Sunday.

Winning the Sprint at the 2025 German GP also marks the first time that Marquez has won a Sprint at the Sachsenring. He will now hope that it leads into the 32-year-old taking his 12th all-time German GP win and ninth in the premier class alone, with more rain on the forecast.

Mat Oxley jokes Marc Marquez is ‘failing miserably’ at working on his ‘instincts’

Marquez recovered from a poor start to win the German GP Sprint ahead of Aprilia’s Marco Bezzecchi by 0.938 seconds. The Ducati rider launched off the line well from pole, but then ran deep into Turn 1 and fell to fifth place after only just avoiding a trip into the gravel trap.

The six-time premier class champion would likely have won at a canter without the error at T1, with Marquez making light work of overtaking Fabio Di Giannantonio, Pedro Acosta and Fabio Quartararo before conquering a scrap on the last lap with Bezzecchi to win the Sprint.

Yet straight after Marquez won the German GP Sprint, the Ducati ace admitted: “Honestly, I took too much risk.” He also suggested: “This year, I’m trying to work a lot on my instincts.” But Mat Oxley gave a tongue-in-cheek response, as he noted: “And so far failing miserably.”

Marc Marquez risked ‘it all’ to beat Marco Bezzecchi and win the German GP Sprint Race

Marquez had indicated going into the German GP weekend that he was focusing on the title battle. The Ducati pilot claimed ‘the most important thing’ was to ‘score points’ and to build his 68-point strong lead over his brother, Alex Marquez of Gresini, atop the riders’ standings.

Yet Marquez went back on his word almost straight away to win the Sachsenring Sprint Race ahead of Bezzecchi in tricky wet conditions after a poor start. But, by taking more risks than he may have wanted, Marquez did build his lead to 78 points with Alex only able to earn P8.

“It’s like he just wants it more than everybody else,” Neil Hodgson said on TNT Sports after the German GP Sprint. “At one point, I looked, he was three-and-a-half seconds behind the leaders on those early laps.

“The bike didn’t look like it was working at one point, but he never gives in. He has a couple of moments, makes mistakes [and] goes wide. Never gives in. Risks it all and yet again comes out victorious. Outstanding.”

Marquez also now holds a 138-point lead over his Ducati teammate, Francesco Bagnaia, as the Italian faces yet another weekend to forget during the 2025 MotoGP season. As well as only registering P12 in the Sprint, Bagnaia’s German GP woes started with P11 in qualifying.
