Many expected Francesco Bagnaia to mount a closer challenge to Marc Marquez at Mugello after his latest findings at Ducati. However, that did not prove to be the case.
Bagnaia has constantly complained about having no feeling in the bike in 2025, particularly from the front end. The jump from the GP24 to the GP25 has proved difficult for the Italian.
At Aragon, it looks as though the 28-year-old had made a breakthrough with his new brake discs, improving his feeling in cornering and braking. Bagnaia stopped complaining to Ducati about the bike as he seemed more confident than ever heading into Mugello.
Despite his new findings and the fact that Mugello favours Bagnaia significantly more than Marquez, the former could only challenge briefly at the front. He finished third in the Sprint and fought brilliantly for the lead in the opening stages of the Grand Prix, before dropping back to P4.
Marquez achieved a clean sweep at Mugello as he moves 40 points clear of brother Alex Marquez and 110 points ahead of Bagnaia. The Italian’s camp has more questions than answers as their modifications did little to improve his bike.

Jorge Lorenzo buys Francesco Bagnaia’s struggles at Ducati as he ‘suffered’ the same problem
Bagnaia ‘suddenly’ suffered understeer at the Italian GP, which caused him to fall behind Fabio Di Giannantonio and off the podium. Three-time MotoGP champion Jorge Lorenzo says he buys into the Ducati rider’s struggles, having encountered the same issues with the manufacturer.
Lorenzo joined Ducati in 2017 after winning his three titles with Yamaha. The Spaniard struggled to adapt to the bike, winning three races in two seasons before ending his career at Honda in 2019.

Speaking via Duralavita, Lorenzo said he ‘suffered a lot’ at Ducati until he made modifications to the bike. He hints that Bagnaia is currently in the same position as he was.
“I agree with you that Marc is better in most areas and that’s how it is, physically, braking, managing the tyres, he’s become an expert, he’s better, OK?” said Lorenzo.
“But I also buy from Pecco because I’ve lived through it and I’ve lived through motorcycles in years that I didn’t like and that I suffered from.
“In 2011, I suffered a lot in pre-season. 2018, with the Ducati, they brought me when it went from 2017 to 2018. I suffered a lot until we modified things and I understood it.
“I mean, I buy the story that Pecco isn’t happy, and with that, I think he’d be closer to Marc.”

How can Francesco Bagnaia improve now after disappointing Italian Grand Prix?
Mugello leaves Bagnaia back at square one after his new brake discs did little to improve his pace and competitiveness in comparison to Marquez.
Test rider Michelle Pirro says Bagnaia cannot measure rider sensations, as he often tells Ducati engineers. He says that the Italian has to learn to work without them and imitate them.
CEO Claudio Domenicali admits Ducati needs to do more for Bagnaia as his struggles continue in 2025. Marquez is establishing a clear advantage, but the manufacturer does not want his teammate to fall behind.
Davide Tardozzi says Ducati ‘have to help’ Bagnaia regain his confidence and speed. It seems that it is the team’s priority over Marquez dominating the field.
