Fabio Quartararo took a sensational pole for the Grand Prix of Spain on Saturday. The shock result ended a drought stretching back to Indonesia 2022.

Quartararo outpaced Ducati rider Marc Marquez by just three-hundredths of a second, ending the Spaniard’s 100% pole record in 2025. It’s also the first pole for another manufacturer since Pedro Acosta on his KTM at last October’s Japanese GP.

El Diablo had already offered Yamaha major encouragement in Qatar by qualifying on the front row. He dropped back to seventh in the race, but the M1 is clearly improving in time-attack configuration.

With Ducati more dominant than ever, Quartararo’s lap surely ranks as one of the best in recent MotoGP history. It was a reminder of the 2021 world champion’s supreme talent.

Isack Hadjar and Jorge Lorenzo congratulate Fabio Quartararo on Spanish Grand Prix heroics

Quartararo celebrated his achievement on Instagram, noting that it was his first pole for 1,134 days.

“Feels so good!!” he said. “Let’s enjoy the Sprint and the Race starting in the front.”

Racing Bulls Formula 1 driver Isack Hadjar, another of the biggest names in French motorsport right now, was one of those to comment. He simply used two fire emojis, followed by a heart.

Meanwhile, on his Instagram story, MotoGP legend Jorge Lorenzo congratulated the 26-year-old. Lorenzo’s last season in the premier class was Quartararo’s first.

“Wow, amazing,” he wrote. Congratulations Fabio and Yamaha!”

Fellow Yamaha riders in awe after watching Fabio Quartararo in Jerez

Quartararo held onto his lead at the start of the Sprint later on Saturday, but as Marquez powered past, he went down. He’ll have another chance in the Grand Prix, but this was a missed opportunity nonetheless.

Still, Alex Rins and Augusto Fernandez are in awe of Quartararo’s riding this weekend, particularly his ‘special’ corner entries. This will be further motivation for Yamaha on their journey back to the front – they have a rider who’s ready to dominate on a contending motorcycle.

Carlo Pernat reckons Quartararo will stay with Yamaha ‘forever’, even though he’s expressed frustration. He signed a lucrative new deal last year that runs until the end of 2026.
