Pedro Acosta may have a contract for KTM Factory Racing through the 2026 MotoGP season, yet his future is very debated with Honda interested in signing the Spaniard.
Rival teams are taking a lot of notice of the uncertain and uncomfortable situation that KTM finds the Austrian team in. KTM have struggled on the track so far this year while also facing a backdrop of their parent company Pierer Mobility managing their billions of euros of debt.
KTM only secured 46 points in the first four rounds of the 2025 MotoGP season, and already sit 174, 80 and 80 points behind Ducati, Gresini and VR46 in the teams’ championship. Their satellite squad, Tech3, even sit in just 10th with 29 points – only Pramac with 24 have fewer.
Acosta may be the lead KTM rider but the 20-year-old has also only earned 24 points to rank 11th in the riders’ championship. So, rival crews are snooping around his situation – including Honda and VR46 with Acosta possibly considering leaving KTM just months after he joined.

Pedro Acosta will mirror Marc Marquez’s diplomatic Honda exit strategy at KTM
Honda met Acosta’s agent in Qatar to discuss his future, with Albert Valera sounding out any possible destinations for his client outside of KTM. Another possible landing spot is the crew Valentino Rossi founded as VR46 have a cheque in hand to sign Acosta if he does quit KTM.
But while Valera speaks to other teams, Acosta has now ‘come to the same conclusion’ that Marc Marquez did at Honda that it would be ‘useless’ to enter a public confrontation about his future at KTM. So, according to Motorsport.com, Acosta will echo Marquez’s diplomacy.

When Marquez decided that the six-time MotoGP champion had reached the end of a very successful road with Honda, the 32-year-old felt his best option to get the Japanese giant to agree to his release was to relentlessly stick to saying that he had a contract there for 2024.
Marquez did not deviate from that stance despite the endless questions the Spaniard faced on his future at Honda. Now, Acosta is mirroring Marquez, and is trying to stick to: “I have a two-year contract and a factory behind me that has given me everything since I was a child.”
Honda and VR46 are ready to fight to sign Pedro Acosta for the 2026 MotoGP season

While Acosta’s public stance regarding his future with KTM will be one of diplomacy, just like it was with Marquez before he left Honda, it is not stopping Honda and VR46 from exploring a move. His contract for 2026 is also not an issue as Acosta can leave KTM for €5m (£4.5m).
Also, Honda plan to demote Luca Marini to LCR if Acosta joins to keep the 27-year-old within their rider stable. The Italian is out of contract after the 2025 season, which has opened the door for Honda to possibly coax Acosta away from KTM to ride beside Joan Mir next season.

VR46 also have one opening for Acosta next season after only awarding Franco Morbidelli a one-year deal to partner Fabio Di Giannantonio this term. And VR46 lead Honda in the race to sign Acosta, who will put a lot of weight on Monday’s Jerez test to decide his KTM future.
