Marc Marquez was once left ‘afraid’ after Spanish Grand Prix crash nearly ended his MotoGP career

Marc Marquez is finally getting back to form in MotoGP, five years on from a horrific accident at the 2020 Spanish Grand Prix.

The six-time champion has won seven of the first eight MotoGP races in 2025 for Ducati, as he looks to write a new chapter in his career.

It has taken Marquez a while to get back into title contention after it was feared he may never be able to achieve such status again.

He could become the oldest champion in the sport’s history at the age of 32, beating Valentino Rossi’s record (30) – someone he would love to steal an accolade from.

Marquez doesn’t want to race cars like Rossi when he retires, but he could yet continue to compete in the premier class for years to come.

Marquez had an almost perfect Qatar Grand Prix debut in 2013 and had his rivals worried about his potential from day one. He’s still a generational talent to this day.

Marc Marquez was ‘afraid’ his right arm would never recover after 2020 Spanish Grand Prix crash

The 2020 season-opener saw Marquez crash out of his home race in spectacular fashion with a highside which would rule him out for the entire season.

He spent much of 2021 trying to rebuild his speed and confidence and by 2022, Honda were nowhere. His glory days were over.

Speaking to The Guardian in 2021, he admitted that he feared that his right arm would never be the same again after doing so much damage to it.

“I was afraid I would not have a normal arm,” he said. “There was one point in October-November when I was not able to take a bottle of water, I was straining to eat, I was not able to move the arm in a normal way. I was afraid.”

On current form, you wouldn’t think that Marquez had been through so much. His thirst for winning remains and he could be around for many more years at the top. He has the talent to do so.

How long did it take for Marc Marquez to win another MotoGP race after his accident?

It would be over a year before Marquez returned to the podium, winning the 2021 German Grand Prix. He won two more races in Texas and Imola that season.

Then he went two campaigns without a victory as Honda struggled to produce a bike worthy of their superstar rider’s talents.

In 2024, he moved to Ducati satellite team Gresini alongside his brother Alex, where he would take three victories.

It would enough to convince the Italian manufacturer to offer him a gig at the factory team, and he hasn’t looked back since. He’s back to his dominant self.
