Jorge Martin is still in hospital recovering from his brutal crash at the Grand Prix of Qatar, sustained with eight laps to go.

The Spaniard fell off his bike and was hit by Fabio Di Giannantonio, who was unable to avoid collecting the Aprilia rider.

Martin sustained 11 broken ribs and is at risk of a punctured lung, which is keeping him restricted to the hospital currently.

It could be a while before he gets to make his MotoGP return this time. His injuries are likely to prevent him from training as soon as he did when he got hurt during the pre-season.

Angel Charte found Martin’s crash ‘strange’ and knew that there was something wrong with the reigning champion immediately.

MotoGP fans say Martin’s injury keeps worsening with every bit of new seemingly extending the potential for how long he may be on the sidelines.

Jorge Martin faces ‘weeks’ in Qatar and is not able to fly home after MotoGP crash

There’s a good possibility that Martin is now out for a much longer period than his pre-season injury forced him to miss.

MotoGP fans were furious with FIM for now throwing a red flag out for Martin’s crash, which left him down in the runoff area.

Simon Patterson believes that there won’t be an opportunity for the 27-year-old to fly home for a few weeks as a complication of his circumstances.

“It’s not quite a punctured lung, it basically means there is air in his chest cavity, which is probably caused by at least one of the 11 broken ribs he also suffered. It means that he’s at risk of a punctured lung,” said Patterson.

“The biggest issue for him with this, we’re going to see the biggest long-term effect because we’ve seen similar incidents in the past. The last one I remember having a really substantial one of these was John McPhee at Philip Island in 2017,” he continued.

“The big issue with it will be getting home because you can’t fly after such an injury. Either he’s going to have to spend a fairly substantial couple of weeks in Doha recuperating, or they’re going to have to charter a special air ambulance that can fly at low level to get him home.”

Jorge Martin expected to fly within ‘two weeks’ of MotoGP accident

Being away from home means that Martin will be losing fitness and extending the time that will be required to make a full recovery.

His muscles will be reducing in size every day, and it’s going to hand him an even more intense training schedule upon his return.

‘Nobody’ predicted Martin’s MotoGP return to involve overtaking Francesco Bagnaia in the sprint. But his next challenge will need him to be even more remarkable.

“If everything goes well, Jorge could try to board a plane and fly in about two weeks, even three,” Motorsport.com’s sources report.

It means that he will miss at least the next two races, which includes his home race in Spain, before he may even get home.
