The 2027 MotoGP regulation changes offer the ideal opportunity for new entrants to join the grid. And one World Superbikes team is giving the move serious consideration.
MotoGP will pivot to smaller engines and simplified aerodynamics in the hope of improving racing and rider safety. There will also be a new tyre supplier as Pirelli replace Michelin.
The sport will mandate 100% sustainable fuels, which makes the engines more road-relevant. And the concessions system will continue to promote greater competition.
Finally, having overseen the enormous growth of Formula 1, Liberty Media are trying to buy MotoGP. This would arguably make the series more attractive than ever before, with even midfield F1 teams seeing their valuations surge to the £1bn mark.
There have been five manufacturers on the grid ever since the departure of Suzuki at the end of the 2022 season. KTM’s future is under threat, with the company as a whole in the midst of a financial crisis, so it’s unclear whether a new arrival would replace the Austrian manufacturer or race alongside them.
BMW may enter MotoGP in 2027 after all amid fresh chatter
Speaking on The Race MotoGP podcast, journalist Simon Patterson relayed new ‘rumblings’ about BMW. The much-talked-about 2027 entry may happen after all.
They’ve already enjoyed success in WSBK, where they’ve competed as a factory team since 2019. Their overall record stands at 29 wins and 66 podiums from 320 starts.
Last season, they won the riders’ championship with Toprak Razgatlioglu, who has himself been linked with a MotoGP switch. There are rumours that their relationship has become strained, so he’s unlikely to make his Grand Prix debut in their colours.

BMW were linked with a KTM takeover deal, but that was described as ‘fake news’. It seems they’re looking to start from scratch.
“There are once again a little bit of rumblings in the GP paddock about the BMW MotoGP project still being a thing that’s coming for ’27 like we expected it to be,” Patterson said.
“I don’t think that sways Toprak’s decision one way or another, especially if he has fallen out with them and the rumours I’ve heard are true.”
Honda face competition from MotoGP rival in Toprak Razgatlioglu pursuit
The Razgatlioglu and BMW stories are running parallel – both generating hype, but still not concrete. If he doesn’t stick with the German company, who would he sign for instead?
Honda are the favourites to land Razgatlioglu, with one radical proposal already floated. He could join their struggling WSBK team for 2026 before switching to Grand Prix racing 12 months later.
However, Yamaha are also eyeing Razgatlioglu after their 2021 WSBK triumph. He’s previously tested MotoGP machinery for the Japanese giants.
Intriguingly, it was reported in the winter that Razgatlioglu came close to joining Pramac for 2025. Perhaps that one is now back on the agenda for the medium-term future.
