Yamaha were expecting to enter the 2025 MotoGP season in a far better position than they have done over the last few years.

Pre-season testing hinted that Fabio Quartararo may be in contention for podiums and maybe even race victories behind the Ducati bikes.

However, that has been the highlight of Yamaha’s year. Since then, neither factory bike has finished inside the top eight and the satellite Pramac team has outperformed them.

There are still 19 MotoGP races left this season, and the concession system should hand them a development advantage over the European manufacturers, but they have a lot of work to do.

Quartararo says Yamaha ‘can’t afford’ not to try new parts in private tests before the summer break. He knows the importance of adding performance.

Yamaha have a problem ‘never seen before’ in 2025 after being hit with tyre wear issues. It has plagued them over longer runs.

Fabio Quartararo reveals Yamaha’s ‘biggest problem’ during the 2025 MotoGP season

Three races in the 2025 season, and Quartararo has already secured his worst-ever start to a campaign by failing to make the top eight in any of the rounds.

The Frenchman will be hoping that a return to Europe at the end of April can be a catalyst for more speed and form.

He knows where the team’s biggest issues lie currently, and he divulged the most urgent matter to Giovanni Zamagni.

“Let’s see if we can find a bit of grip, which is the biggest thing we need,” he said.

“The biggest problem is that we haven’t found for a long time for years and now we’re working very hard and we really hope to find a solution for that. With the grip that we can find, I think we can go a bit faster.”

Why Fabio Quartararo has every reason to be frustrated with Yamaha over MotoGP performance

Quartararo committed his future to Yamaha last year by signing a new deal which expires at the end of 2026.

Effectively, he is giving them right up until the end of the current regulations to prove that they can return to the top.

So far, they have only moved backwards. Honda now have a quicker bike than them, but they are working hard and investing a lot to catch up.

By all means, isn’t a requirement for 2026, but showing a positive train of development and vision for the future is important.

If they fail to provide, they risk losing their superstar world champion rider for good, while he may be in the prime of his career.
