Marc Marquez and Jorge Martin were involved in one of the most hotly-contested seat battles in MotoGP history last season. In the end, it was Marquez who got the Ducati factory ride next to Francesco Bagnaia.
Marquez has already quashed any lingering doubt over Ducati’s decision. A statistically perfect start to the 2025 season has put him 16 points clear of brother Alex at the top of the MotoGP standings.
Meanwhile, Martin hasn’t yet had a chance to prove his old employers wrong. After joining Aprilia, he injured himself twice in pre-season.

Some Aprilia insiders doubt whether Martin will return at the Qatar Grand Prix, currently his stated target. If there was any small hope that he could contend for the title against the hegemonic Ducati, it’s now been completely removed.
Stefan Bradl says ‘aura’ is the difference between Marc Marquez and Jorge Martin
Speaking to GPOne, former Honda rider Stefan Bradl argued that the 2025 season is still ‘exciting’ despite Marquez’s apparent dominance. He’s relishing the return of a true ‘superstar’ to the front of the MotoGP grid.
The Spaniard hasn’t won the title since 2019, having left a declining Honda team after a series of surgeries. Marquez looks set to match Valentino Rossi with a seventh premier-class title this term, which would make the 2025 campaign historic.
Marquez previously battled with iconic figures like Rossi and Jorge Lorenzo, but one could argue none of his current rivals have achieved legendary status just yet. Indeed, Bagnaia is the only other rider with more than 11 wins, and even then, he’s on less than half of Marquez’s tally.
| RANK | RIDER | WINS |
| 1 | Marc Marquez | 64 |
| 2 | Francesco Bagnaia | 29 |
| 3 | Fabio Quartararo | 11 |
| 4 | Maverick Vinales | 10 |
| 5 | Jorge Martin | 8 |
For all his speed, Bradl says Martin has yet to earn the same intangible status as his compatriot.
“I find this situation exciting because MotoGP also needs this change at the moment,” he said. “It’s good to have a superstar like that finally leading the world championship again, after more than five years, and competing up in front.
“Jorge Martin is an exceptionally fast rider, but he lacks Marc’s special aura.”
Ducati CEO forced to address 2023 claim that they didn’t need Marc Marquez
Even though the Desmosedici bikes remain at the top of the pecking order, Martin stands by his decision to leave Ducati. He could have retained current-spec machinery at one of their satellite teams, but he preferred a factory ride at Aprilia.
Martin was unhappy with Ducati’s reaction when Enea Bastianini overtook him at the very last corner at Mugello last year. That moment was ‘gnawing’ away at him before he decided to leave.
Ducati CEO Claudio Domenicali claimed Marquez wasn’t ‘right’ for his team in 2023, pointing to Bagnaia, Bastianini and Martin to highlight the depth of talent at their disposal. In a recent interview, he was asked whether he’d changed his mind.
He said that the Ant of Cervera’s performances on a GP23 at Gresini shifted the landscape. Marquez ‘had to know’ whether he was still competitive after his injury nightmare, and he emphatically banished any notion of decline.
