Pedro Acosta has endured a difficult start to the 2025 MotoGP campaign. It has led to speculation that he may leave KTM early.
The Spaniard had a mega debut season in the premier class in 2024 with Tech3. Team boss Herve Ponchartal labelled Acosta an ‘alien’ as he grabbed five podiums and finished sixth in the standings.
His performances prompted a move to the factory KTM team. Acosta signed a two-year deal with the team that takes him until the new regulations in 2027.
The 20-year-old has bought into the project at KTM after having reassurances from the manufacturer about their future. The company is in a desperate financial crisis, reporting debts of around £2bn.
Acosta demanded answers from KTM over the winter as he visited the factory in Austria. He wanted assurances that his 2025 bike would be competitive.
There were fears that the manufacturer’s MotoGP project would be affected by their financial problems. While KTM have stressed their commitment to motorsport, Acosta has not had the start to the year he would have hoped for.

Pedro Acosta makes it clear he wants to see out his KTM contract
At the 2025 season opener in Buriram, the Spaniard fell off his RC16 at turn one in the early stages. He limped home in 19th but Acosta displayed top-five pace after his crash – an encouraging sign from the 20-year-old.
At the Argentina Grand Prix, the Spaniard was eighth in the Grand Prix, finishing behind teammate Brad Binder. After the first two races, Acosta has scored 13 points – 17 fewer than he managed at this stage in 2024.
Peter Bom fears Acosta is ‘less determined’ in 2025 and lacks motivation at KTM. His start to the season and the manufacturer’s financial crisis have prompted rumours he may leave the team before his contract expires.
However, speaking to AS, Acosta has made it very clear his ‘goal’ is to see out his contract. “The race was better than the sprint,” he said after Argentina.
“We have to understand why the bike changes so much from one session to the next, and from one day to the next. But at least the bike performed like that, like a bike. We don’t like it this way. Neither do I, nor does Brad Binder, who has won world championships and MotoGP races.
“And the same goes for Maverick Viñales, who is a Moto3 champion and has fought for a MotoGP title, and Enea Bastianini, who has also.”
Despite not likely his position in the championship so far, he has stressed that he has a two-year contract and intends to see it out.

Keith Huewen is ‘pretty confident’ Pedro Acosta has a way out of KTM – will he take it?
It is clear KTM do not currently have a bike capable of winning a race – or maybe even a podium for that matter. If results do not improve, there will certainly be thoughts from Acosta about his future with the team.
Keith Huewen thinks Acosta has an exit clause in his contract. If KTM’s performance does not improve, he may consider his options – the manufacturer cannot afford to lose him.
The Spaniard has been linked with a move to Valentino Rossi’s VR46 team. Franco Morbidelli is out of contract at the end of the year, but his close ties to the MotoGP legend make it unlikely he will leave.
Honda have also been linked with the 20-year-old. However, Lucio Cecchinello admitted it would be ‘useless’ signing Acosta given the team’s current trajectory – he is worried the 20-year-old would not perform as expected on their bikes.
