Franco Morbidelli is one of Italy’s best motorcycle racers currently competing in MotoGP, so here is everything you need to know about him.
After taking up professional motorcycle racing, Morbidelli went on to win the Superstock 600 title in 2013 with two wins and three podiums. In the same year, he had wildcard outings in Moto2 at Misano, Motegi and Valencia.
He signed with the Italtrans Racing Team for a full Moto2 campaign in 2014, and in 2015 he achieved his first podium at Indianapolis. After sustaining a broken leg during a motocross training session, he missed much of the remaining races in 2015.
By 2016 he signed to the highly successful Marc VDS team and took several podiums including Netherlands, Austria, Great Britain, Aragon, Japan, Australia, Malaysia and Valencia. He finished the year fourth in the riders’ title, but the following year he would build on his success.

Franco Morbidelli won his first world championship title in 2017 in Moto2
Morbidelli entered the 2017 season as the title favourite and took his first win at the opening race in Qatar, going on to win a total of eight races during the season with four podiums.
This was enough for him to head into the Malaysian GP with a chance of winning the title, but as the nearest title challenger Thomas Luthi was declared unfit to race due to a crash in qualifying, he managed to clinch it with just a third place.
Morbidelli ended the year on 308 points which was an astonishing 65 points more than Luthi, with Alex Marquez and Francesco Bagnaia also making up the top five.

Franco Morbidelli makes it to MotoGP in 2018
Morbidelli made his debut in the premier class with Marc VDS in 2018 and took the rookie of the year honours, after finishing 15th overall in the riders’ standings.
In 2019, Morbidelli switched to a satellite Yamaha team and finished in the top six on seven occasions, before going on to take his maiden victory at the race in Misano in the 2020 season.
Two more victories came his way at Teruel and Valencia, followed by two podium finishes to help him finish second in the standings that year behind eventual champion Joan Mir.
Morbidelli went into the 2021 season as one of the title contenders, however, a knee injury at the start of the season hampered any progress. He would make a return at Misano that year where he partnered Fabio Quartararo in the factory Yamaha team.
In 2023 he signed a deal to remain at the factory team but after struggling to produce results on track, Morbidelli and Yamaha parted ways at the end of the season. In 2024 he made the switch to Pramac Racing, but a heavy crash in pre-season training severely hampered his progress at the start of the year.
He finished in the top six on six occasions in 2024, which included being as high as P3 during the San Marino GP Sprint race. In 2025, he made the switch to VR46 Racing Team.
